Pinpoint Test H: The Tachometer Is Inoperative

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2021 Ford F-150. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

See Tachometer. REFER to: Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) - System Operation and Component Description .

If the IPC does not receive the engine rpm data from the PCM for 5 seconds or longer, the IPC defaults the tachometer to 0 rpm.

    Possible Sources

    • Communication concern
    • PCM concern
    • GWM
    • IPC

  2. H1 PERFORM THE IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER) SELF-TEST

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the IPC self-test.

    • Check for recorded Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) from the IPC self-test.

Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded?

Yes  REFER to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart .
    No  GO to  H2
  3. H2 CHECK THE GWM (GATEWAY MODULE A) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, check the GWM Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Codes (CMDTCs).

Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded?

Yes  REFER to: Controller Area Network (CAN) Module Communications Network .
    No  GO to  H3
  4. H3 PERFORM THE TACHOMETER ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE DIAGNOSTIC SCAN TOOL

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, view the IPC Parameter Identifications (PIDs).

    • Access the IPC and control the TACH_IND (%) PID

    • NOTE: Make sure to set the diagnostic scan tool to 0 rpm before beginning this step.

Command the tachometer on and off while monitoring the tachometer.

Does the tachometer increase to approximately 8, 000 rpm (4-inch display IPC) or 7, 000 rpm (8-inch display IPC) when commanded on and return to 0 rpm when commanded off?

Yes  DIAGNOSE all PCM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). REFER to the Master DTC Chart.
    No  GO to  H4
  5. H4 CHECK FOR CORRECT IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER) OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect the IPC connector.

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Reconnect the IPC connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly.

    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present?

Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable service articles: TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA. If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions. If no service articles address this concern, INSTALL a new IPC. REFER to: Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) .
No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
