Pinpoint Test BJ: The Engine Hours And Engine Idle Hours Display Is Inoperative

  1. Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    See Engine Hours Display and Engine Idle Hours Display. REFER to: Message Center - System Operation and Component Description .

    If the engine rpm data message is missing or invalid for less than 5 seconds, the IPC defaults the engine hours and engine idle hours displays to the last display based on the last message received.

    If the vehicle speed message is missing or invalid for 5 seconds or longer, the IPC sets DTC U0100:00 and defaults the engine hours and engine idle hours to the last displayed value with no additional accumulation.

    Possible Sources 

    • Speedometer indication concern
    • Tachometer indication concern
    • IPC

  2. BJ1 VERIFY THE IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER) IS SET TO THE ENGINE HOUR AND ENGINE IDLE HOUR DISPLAY SCREEN

    • Ignition ON.

    • NOTE: The IPC and message center navigation can be found in the Owner's Literature.

      Using the message center controls, make sure the IPC is set to the engine hour and engine idle hour display screen.

    Is the IPC set to the engine hour and engine idle hour display screen? 

    Yes  GO to  BJ2
    No  The engine hour and engine idle hour display is operating correctly. The IPC was not set to the correct display screen.
  3. BJ2 CHECK THE SPEEDOMETER FOR CORRECT OPERATION

    • Verify the speedometer operates correctly.

    Does the speedometer operate correctly? 

    Yes  For the engine idle hour display, GO to  BJ3 For the engine hour display, GO to  BJ4
    No  GO to Pinpoint Test F 
  4. BJ3 CHECK THE TACHOMETER FOR CORRECT OPERATION

    • Verify the tachometer operates correctly.

    Does the tachometer operate correctly? 

    Yes  GO to  BJ4
    No  GO to Pinpoint Test I 
  5. BJ4 RETRIEVE THE RECORD DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) FROM THE IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER) SELF-TEST

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the IPC self-test.

    Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 

    Yes  REFER to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart .
    No  GO to  BJ5
  6. BJ5 CHECK FOR CORRECT IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER) OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect the IPC connector.

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Reconnect the IPC connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly.

    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable service articles: TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA. If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions. If no service articles address this concern, INSTALL a new IPC. REFER to: Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) .
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
