Side Airbag: Removal

The following procedure prescribes critical repair steps required for correct restraint system operation during a crash. Follow all notes and steps carefully. Failure to follow step instructions may result in incorrect operation of the restraint system and increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
WARNING:
Front seat backrest trim covers installed on seats equipped with seat side airbags cannot be repaired. A new trim cover must be installed. Cleaning is permissible. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side airbag deploying incorrectly and increase the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.

WARNING: Before beginning any service procedure, refer to health and safety Warnings in General Information. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

- Remove the front seat. Refer to: Front Seat .
- Detach the electrical connector retainers and position the wire harnesses aside.

- Detach the backrest cover straps.
- If equipped. Route the backrest cover straps through the backrest blower motor snorkel.
- Position the backrest cover upward.
- Release the backrest cover lower J-clips.

NOTE: To install, gradually alternate the left and right seat backrest cover zippers to prevent damage to the seat backrest cover.
Unzip the backrest cover zipper on each side.
- Position the backrest cover upward.

NOTE: For installation, note the routing of the backrest blower motor snorkel (if equipped).
Detach the hook-and-loop retainer and position the backrest cover strap aside.
- Remove the pin-type retainers.
- Remove the side airbag nuts.
Torque: 55 lb.in (6.2 Nm)

- Detach the side airbag studs from the backrest frame and position the side airbag out of the backrest foam pad pocket.
- Disengage the side airbag electrical connector locking wedge.
- Disconnect the side airbag electrical connector.

Remove the side airbag from out of the backrest cover deployment chute.
