Pinpoint Test W: B11D9:16, B11D9:17

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2021 Ford F-150. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Refer to Wiring Diagrams Two Wheel Drive/Four Wheel Drive Systems for schematic and connector information.

    Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

If the ATCM observes an overpower or a low voltage condition, a DTC is set and all ATCM outputs are turned off.

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
ATCM B11D9:16 Vehicle Battery: Circuit Voltage Below Threshold This DTC sets when the ATCM detects battery voltage less than 8 volts for 10 seconds or more at ATCM.
ATCM B11D9:17 Vehicle Battery: Circuit Voltage Above Threshold This DTC sets when the ATCM detects battery voltage greater than 17 volts for 10 seconds or more at ATCM.

    Possible Sources

    • Fuse
    • Wiring, terminals or connectors
    • ATCM

  2. W1 RETRIEVE ALL CMDTCS IN ALL MODULES

    • Ignition ON.

    • Enter the following diagnostic mode: Retrieve All CMDTCs.

Are and charging system DTCs present in one or more modules?

Yes  For diagnosis of the battery and charging system, REFER to: Charging System - 2.7L EcoBoost (238kW/324PS)/3.5L EcoBoost (BM) . REFER to: Charging System - 3.3L Duratec-V6/5.0L 32V Ti-VCT . REFER to: Charging System - 3.0L Power Stroke Diesel .
    No  GO to  W2
  3. W2 CHECK VOLTAGE AND GROUND TO THE ATCM (ALL TERRAIN CONTROL MODULE)

NOTE: The ATCM is internal to the ATCM Switch assembly and cannot be serviced separately.

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect MSS / ATCM C2071.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      C2071-1

      C2071-4

Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?

    Yes  GO to  W4
    No  GO to  W3
  4. W3 CHECK VOLTAGE TO THE MSS (MODE SELECT SWITCH) / ATCM (ALL TERRAIN CONTROL MODULE)

    • Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      C3393-1
      GFD559498Courtesy of FORD MOTOR COMPANY
      Ground

Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?

Yes  REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR all CMDTCs.
No  VERIFY BJB fuse(s) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the open circuit. If not OK, REFER to the OEM ELECTRICAL WIRING DIAGRAM INTRODUCTION to identify possible causes of the circuit short. CLEAR all CMDTCs.
  5. W4 CHECK FOR CORRECT ATCM (ALL TERRAIN CONTROL MODULE) OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect all ATCM connectors.

    • Check for the following:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)

      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins

      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Connect all ATCM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present?

Yes  INSTALL a new ATCM. REFER to: All Terrain Control Module (ATCM) - Vehicles Without: Center Console .
No  The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of the connector or pin issues.
