Pinpoint Test F: Sway Or Roll

  1. Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    REFER to: Suspension System .

    Possible Sources 

    • Incorrect vehicle load
    • Loose wheel nuts
    • Struts or shock absorbers
    • Loose hardware
    • Worn stabilizer bar bushings or links
    • Damaged or broken stabilizer bar
    • Worn springs

  2. F1 CHECK FOR SIGNS OF OVERLOADED, UNEVENLY, OR INCORRECTLY LOADED VEHICLE

    • Question the customer on vehicle loading and visually inspect the vehicle.

    Can signs of overloaded, uneven or incorrect vehicle load be determined? 

    Yes  NOTIFY the customer of incorrect vehicle loading.
    No  GO to  F2
  3. F2 INSPECT THE WHEEL NUTS

    • INSPECT the wheel nuts for proper torque.

    Are any of the wheel nuts loose? 

    Yes  TIGHTEN the wheel nut(s) to specification. REFER to: Wheel and Tire .
    No  GO to  F3
  4. F3 INSPECT STRUTS AND SHOCK ABSORBERS

    • INSPECT the struts and shock absorbers for signs of leakage, damage or excessive wear.

    Do the struts and shock absorbers show signs of leakage, damage or excessive wear? 

    Yes  INSTALL new struts or shock absorbers as necessary REFER to: Shock Absorber and Spring Assembly . REFER to: Shock Absorber and Spring Assembly - RWD. REFER to: Rear Shock Absorber - 4WD.
    No  GO to  F4
  5. F4 INSPECT THE STABILIZER BRACKET TO FRAME BOLTS

    • INSPECT the stabilizer bracket to frame bolts for proper torque.

    Are all of the fasteners tightened to specification? 

    Yes  GO to  F5
    No  TIGHTEN the stabilizer bracket to frame bolts to specification. REFER to: Front Stabilizer Bar - RWD. REFER to: Front Stabilizer Bar - 4WD. REFER to: Front Stabilizer Bar Link - RWD. REFER to: Front Stabilizer Bar Link - 4WD.
  6. F5 INSPECT THE STABILIZER BAR BUSHINGS AND LINKS FOR DAMAGE OR EXCESSIVE WEAR

    • INSPECT the stabilizer bar bushings and links for damage or excessive wear.

    Do the bushings or links show signs of damage or excessive wear? 

    Yes  INSTALL new stabilizer bar bushings or links as necessary. REFER to: Front Stabilizer Bar - RWD. REFER to: Front Stabilizer Bar - 4WD.
    No  GO to  F6
  7. F6 INSPECT THE STABILIZER BAR

    • INSPECT the stabilizer bar.

    Is the stabilizer bar damaged ir broken? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new stabilizer bar. REFER to: Front Stabilizer Bar - RWD. REFER to: Front Stabilizer Bar - 4WD.
    No  GO to  F7
  8. F7 INSPECT THE SPRINGS FOR DAMAGE OR EXCESSIVE WEAR

    • INSPECT the springs for damage or excessive wear.

    Are any of the springs damaged or worn? 

    Yes  INSTALL new springs as necessary. REFER to: Shock Absorber and Spring Assembly - RWD. REFER to: Shock Absorber and Spring Assembly - 4WD. REFER to: Rear Shock Absorber .
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by an intermittent component concern.
