Pinpoint Tests BA: Steering Gear Appears To Be Leaking Fluid

Steering Gears That Appear To Be Leaking Power Steering Fluid
- EPAS steering gears are not filled with power steering fluid.
- Only HPAS gears are filled with power steering fluid.
- Only HPAS gears can leak power steering fluid.
Pinpoint Test Purpose
To provide diagnostic direction about external fluids leaking onto EPAS gears and components.
External Sources Of Fluids:
- Engine coolant
- Engine oil
- Transmission fluid
- Brake fluid
- Fluid from nearby reservoir bottles
- BA1: IDENTIFY THE STEERING SYSTEM TYPE
- Determine if the steering gear is electric or hydraulic.
- Consult the VIN and associated steering components to verify if the steering system is electric or hydraulic assist.
- Visual Inspection:
- If there are hydraulic hoses connected to the steering gear, the steering system is hydraulic assist.
- If there are no hydraulic hoses connected to the steering gear, the steering system is electric assist.
- Is the steering gear an electric steering gear?
Yes No The electric steering gear is not filled with power steering fluid (or any fluids) and therefore does not leak fluids.
The fluids on the housing and other steering components may be due to an engine compartment source of external fluids.
CHECK OASIS for any applicable service articles: TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA. If a service article exists for this concern, FOLLOW the service article instructions.If this is not an electric steering gear, then SELECT the appropriate vehicle line in the Service Information and PROCEED with diagnosing the hydraulic steering system. - Determine if the steering gear is electric or hydraulic.
