Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2020 Ford F-150. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The hydraulic flow switch detects the fluid flow from the power steering system. When the engine is running, the power steering fluid is flowing and the switch is open. When the engine is off, the power steering fluid is not flowing and the switch is closed.

When the flow switch is open, the hydraulic pump motor relay coil is grounded through the ABS module, when the brake pedal is pressed the ABS grounds the relay. When the flow switch is closed, the hydraulic pump motor relay coil has a direct connection to ground and activates when the brake pedal is pressed.
