Starter Motor: Removal

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Disconnect the battery. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  3. Remove the bolts and the transmission housing cover.

    Torque: 71 lb.in (8 Nm)

  4. If equipped, remove the bolts and the underbody shield.

    Torque: M8 : 30 lb.ft (40 Nm) | M6 : 71 lb.in (8 Nm)

  5. Remove the bolts and the engine underbody shield.

    Torque: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

    • Remove the grounding cable bolt.

      Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

    • Remove the small starter motor solenoid wire connector nut.

      Torque: 53 lb.in (6 Nm)

    • Remove the large starter motor solenoid wire connector nut and position the cables aside.

      Torque: 106 lb.in (12 Nm)

  6. Remove the bolts and the starter motor.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  7. Inspect the starter motor drive gear and flywheel ring gear. Refer to: Starter Motor Drive Gear and Flywheel Ring Gear Inspection .
