Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System Module: Removal

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  2. Remove the following items:

    1. Remove the air cleaner. Refer to: Air Cleaner .
    2. Remove the fender splash shield. Refer to: Fender Splash Shield .
    3. Remove the exhaust pressure sensor. Refer to: Exhaust Pressure Sensor .

  3. Drain the cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
  4. Remove the engine appearance cover.

  5. Remove and discard the fastener. Position aside the bracket and fuel tube assembly.

    1. Disconnect EGR temperature sensor electrical connector.
    2. Remove the wiring retainer.
    3. Remove the retainer from the timing belt cover.
    4. Remove the retainers and the EGR outlet tube.

    • Remove and discard the outlet gaskets.

  6. Using a holding device, hold the steering wheel in the straight ahead position.

  7. Remove and discard the bolt. Disconnect and position aside the lower steering shaft.

  8. Release the clamp and disconnect the coolant hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

    • If equipped, disconnect the electrical connector and the emission system control hose.

    • Disconnect the wire retainers from the oil level indicator.

    • If equipped, disconnect the electrical connector and the emission system control hose.

    • Disconnect the wire retainers from the oil level indicator.

  9. Detach the retainers and disconnect the coolant hose connector.

  10. Remove the oil level indicator.

    1. Remove the stud bolt.
    2. Remove the bolt.

    1. Detach the retainer.
    2. Detach the retainer.
    3. Remove the fastener.
    4. Pull the oil level indicator tube upwards to remove.

  11. Inspect the O-ring seal and replace if necessary.

  12. Remove the pin-type retainer. Remove the bolts and the transmission housing cover.

  13. If equipped, remove the bolts and the underbody shield.

  14. If equipped, remove the bolts and the skid plate.

  15. Disconnect the block heater electrical connector and the retainer.

  16. Remove the lower radiator coolant tube bolt.

    1. Remove the hose clamp and position the aside hose. Remove the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

  18. Remove the heater coolant outlet tube.

  19. Inspect the O-ring seal and replace if necessary.

    1. Release the clamp and disconnect the coolant bypass hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
    2. Remove the bolts and the coolant bypass tube.

  20. Inspect the O-ring seal and replace if necessary.

  21. Remove the EGR cooler inlet tube bolts.

    1. Remove the bolt.
    2. Remove the stud bolt.
    3. Remove the bolts and EGR cooler assembly.

  22. Remove and discard the inlet tube gasket.

  23. Inspect the grommet and replace if necessary.

  24. NOTE: The removal of the EGR coolant inlet tube is only necessary if the EGR system module is being replaced.

    Remove the bolt and the EGR coolant inlet tube.

  25. Inspect the O-ring seal and replace if necessary.
