Fuel System - Overview

The fuel system consists of the following:

Electric Fuel Pump (located in the diesel delivery module in the tank): 

The electric (low pressure) fuel pump draws fuels directly from the fuel tank through a 300 micron filter (non serviceable). The fuel then enters an air separator and pressure damper. The air/fuel mix leaving the air separator and pressure damper powers a jet pump that keeps the fuel reservoir full.

The fuel then exits the in tank diesel delivery module under pressure and is filtered by the 4 micron primary fuel filter followed by the secondary filter before entering the HP (high pressure) fuel system.

Fuel Filter/Water Separator: 

The vehicle is equipped with an remote mounted fuel filter/water separator. Drain the water from the externally mounted fuel filter/water separator at the recommended maintenance intervals. Refer to the Owner's Literature for the maintenance intervals.

While the engine is running a water in fuel indicator on the instrument panel or a "Water in Fuel, Drain Filter" message on the instrument panel message center may alert the operator. When this occurs drain the water from the water separator as soon as possible to prevent damage to the fuel injection system.

Fuel Pump Shut-off Feature 

In the event of a moderate to severe collision, the vehicle is equipped with a Fuel Pump and Sender Shut-off Feature that is initiated by the event notification signal.

The event notification signal is a signal provided by the RCM to the Fuel Pump Control Module. Signal communication between the RCM and the Fuel Pump Control Module allows the PCM to shut-off the Fuel Pump.

Should the vehicle shut off after a collision due to this feature, the vehicle may be restarted by first turning the ignition to the OFF position and then turn the ignition to the ON position. In some instances the vehicle may not start the first time and may take one additional ignition cycle.
