Fuel Injection Pump: Installation

  1. Install the fuel injection pump, then install and tighten the bolts.

    Torque: 17 lb.ft (23 Nm)

  2. Install the fuel injection pump sprocket and nut.

  3. Using the special tool, hold the fuel injection pump sprocket, then tighten the nut. Remove the special tool. Use Special Service Tool: 303-1678 Remover, Fuel Pump Pulley Holding Tool.

    Torque: 37 lb.ft (50 Nm)

  4. Install the fuel injection pump bracket, then install and tighten the bolts.

    Torque: 1. Tighten to: : 89 lb.in (10 Nm) | 2. Tighten to: : 106 lb.in (12 Nm)

  5. Install the accessory drive cover, then install and tighten the stud bolts.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  6. NOTE: When removing or installing the fuel injection pump noise insulator, spreading the openings will reduce the risk of damage.

    Install the fuel injection pump noise insulator.

    1. Install the special tool to correctly time the fuel injection pump. Install Special Service Tool: 303-1679 Timing Tool, Fuel Pump Rear Access.
    2. Remove the special tool. Remove Special Service Tool: 303-1679 Timing Tool, Fuel Pump Rear Access.

  7. Install the rear end accessory drive belt. Refer to: Rear End Accessory Drive (READ) .
  8. NOTE: Make sure that a new fuel rail balance tube is installed.

    Install the new fuel rail balance tube, the clamp and the bolts. Tighten the fuel rail balance tube fittings at the fuel rails, and at the bolts, finger tight at this stage.

  9. NOTE: Make sure that a new fuel rail supply tube is installed.

    Install the new fuel rail supply tube then, tighten the fuel supply tube fittings finger tight at this stage.

  10. Install the fuel tube bracket, then install and tighten bolt finger tight at this stage.

  11. Tighten in the following 7 stages.

    Torque: Stage 1: Tighten the bolts to: : 89 lb.in (10 Nm) | Stage 2: Tighten the right fuel rail balance tube fitting to: : 89 lb.in (10 Nm) | Stage 3: Tighten the left fuel rail balance tube fitting to: : 89 lb.in (10 Nm) | Stage 4: Tighten the right fuel rail balance tube fitting to: : 142 lb.in (16 Nm) | Stage 5: Tighten the left fuel rail balance tube fitting to: : 142 lb.in (16 Nm) | Stage 6: Tighten the right fuel rail balance tube fitting an additional: : 50 deg. | Stage 7: Tighten the left fuel rail balance tube fitting an additional: : 50 deg.

  12. Tighten in the following 6 stages.

    Torque: Stage 1: Tighten the fuel injection pump fitting to: : 89 lb.in (10 Nm) | Stage 2: Tighten the fuel rail fitting to: : 89 lb.in (10 Nm) | Stage 3: Tighten the fuel injection pump fitting to: : 142 lb.in (16 Nm) | Stage 4: Tighten the fuel rail fitting to: : 142 lb.in (16 Nm) | Stage 5: Tighten the fuel injection pump fitting an additional: : 50 deg. | Stage 6: Tighten the fuel rail fitting an additional: : 50 deg.

  13. Connect the fuel injection pump electrical connector.

    1. Install the fuel injector fuel return line, then attach the fuel injector fuel return line retainers.
    2. NOTE: The use of long needle nose pliers or another commercially available tool may aid in the connecting of the fuel injector fuel return line fittings.

      Connect the fuel injector fuel return line fittings at the fuel injectors.

    1. Align the center axis of fuel injector fuel return line fitting on the fuel injector fuel injector spigot. Press down on the fuel injector fuel return line fittings in the 2 indicated locations, until they are fully seated with an audible click and a hard stop.
    2. Push down on the center of the fuel injector fuel return line fitting until it is fully seated. This is the secondary latch.

  14. Attach the wiring harness retainers, then connect the fuel injector electrical connectors.

  15. NOTE: Make sure that a new fuel return tube is installed.

    Install the new fuel return tube, connect the quick release couplings, attach the fitting to the stud, then attach the fuel return tube retainers. Refer to Quick Release Coupling

  16. Install the air cleaner outlet pipe. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe .
  17. NOTE: Make sure that a new fuel rail supply tube is installed.

    Install the new fuel rail supply tube, then install the bolt. Tighten the fuel supply tube fittings and the bolt finger tight at this stage. Then tighten in the following 7 stages.

    Torque: Stage 1: Tighten the bolt to: : 89 lb.in (10 Nm) | Stage 2: Tighten the fuel rail fitting to: : 89 lb.in (10 Nm | Stage 3: Tighten the fuel injection pump fitting to: : 89 lb.in (10 Nm) | Stage 4: Tighten the fuel rail fitting to: : 142 lb.in (16 Nm) | Stage 5: Tighten the fuel injection pump fitting to: : 142 lb.in (16 Nm) | Stage 6: Tighten the fuel rail fitting an additional: : 50 deg. | Stage 7: Tighten the fuel injection pump fitting an additional: : 50 deg.

  18. Install the left insulator.

  21. Install the bracket, then install and tighten retainers.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  23. Attach the fuel injector fuel return line retainers, then install and tighten the wiring harness bolt.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

    1. Install the vacuum tube assembly, then attach the vacuum reservoir retainers.
    2. Attach the valve to the bracket.
    3. Connect the electrical connector, then connect the quick release coupling. Refer to Quick Release Coupling :
    4. Attach the vacuum tube retainers, then connect the vacuum hose at the EGR.

  24. Attach the wiring harness bracket to the rear engine lifting eye and to the transmission case.

  25. Install the secondary fuel filter, then install and tighten the bolt.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

    1. If equipped, attach the vacuum tube retainers.
    2. If equipped, connect the quick release coupling. Refer to Quick Release Coupling

  26. Connect the fuel tube assembly quick release coupling. Refer to Quick Release Coupling

    1. Install the fuel supply tube assembly, then install and tighten the bolt.

      Torque: 17 lb.ft (23 Nm)

    2. Connect the fuel supply tube assembly quick release couplings. Refer to Quick Release Coupling

  27. Connect the fuel supply tube assembly electrical connector, then attach the wire retainer.

  28. Connect the quick release couplings, then attach the fuel tube retainers. Refer to Quick Release Coupling :

  29. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  30. Bleed the fuel system. Refer to: Fuel System Bleeding .
  31. Install the engine appearance cover bracket, then install and tighten the retainers.

    Torque: 44 lb.in (5 Nm)
