Engine Cooling System Condition Evaluation

Inspection 

  1. Use the following table to evaluate the cooling system condition and choose the correct procedure to restore the system.
    CONDITION  ACTION 
    A component in the cooling system has been removed to gain access to another component or system, or any of the following components have been replaced: 
    Turbocharger
    Thermostat
    Radiator
    Heater core
    Coolant Pump
    Cooling System hoses or tubes
    EGR cooler without coolant/exhaust cross-contamination
    Perform coolant test procedure. For additional information, Refer to: Coolant Test .
    NOTE: *Except as part of a new engine or short block installation.
    Major coolant loss, including empty coolant bottle, more than 24 hours before repair*Evidence of stop leak being used*Coolant is being replaced*Cooling system overheating condition is evident or suspected*
    Perform cooling system flush. For additional information, Refer to: Engine Cooling System Flushing - Without Oil or Transmission Fluid Contamination .
    Any of the following components have been replaced (except as part of a new engine or short block installation): 
    Oil cooler
    Transmission fluid cooler
    EGR cooler with coolant/exhaust cross-contamination
    Cylinder head
    If no oil contamination of the coolant, perform cooling system flush. For additional information, Refer to: Engine Cooling System Flushing - Without Oil or Transmission Fluid Contamination . If coolant is contaminated with oil, perform with-contamination cooling system flush.
