Secondary Timing Chain Tensioner: Installation

Left hand secondary timing chain tensioner 

NOTE: Do not remove the secondary timing chain tensioner shipping clip, until instructed to do so.
  1. Apply clean engine oil to the secondary timing chain tensioner O-ring seals and mega cap bore.

  2. Install the secondary timing chain tensioner by pushing it down all the way until a snap is heard and the tensioner is seated all the way down the mega cap bore.

  3. Install the secondary timing chain tensioner shoe.

  4. Position the secondary timing chain onto the VCT assemblies. Align the colored links on the secondary timing chain with the timing marks on the VCT assemblies as shown below in the illustration.

    • The timing mark on the intake VCT assembly should align between the 2 consecutive colored links.

    • The timing mark on the exhaust VCT assembly should align with the single colored link.

  5. Install the VCT assemblies and the secondary timing chain onto the camshafts. The timing mark on the exhaust VCT assembly should be approximately in the 1 o'clock position.

  6. NOTE: Use a wrench on the flats of the camshaft to hold the camshafts while tightening the VCT assembly bolts.

    1. Install the intake VCT assembly bolts.

      Torque:| Stage 1: 133 lb.in (15 Nm) | Stage 2: 90°

    2. Install the exhaust VCT assembly bolt.

      Torque:| Stage 1: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm) | Stage 2: Loosen: 360° | Stage 3: 20 lb.ft (27 Nm) | Stage 4: 150°

  7. Remove and discard the secondary timing chain tensioner shipping clip.

  8. Activate the secondary timing chain tensioner by pressing down on the secondary timing chain and tensioner top shoe until it bottoms out, let go of the tensioner and it will spring up putting tension on the chain.

  9. Install the LH timing chain. Refer to: Timing Chain .

    NOTE: Do not remove the secondary timing chain tensioner shipping clip, until instructed to do so.
  10. Apply clean engine oil to the secondary timing chain tensioner O-ring seals and mega cap bore.

  11. Install the secondary timing chain tensioner by pushing it down all the way until a snap is heard and the tensioner is seated all the way down the mega cap bore.

  12. Install the secondary timing chain tensioner shoe.

  13. Position the secondary timing chain onto the VCT assemblies. Align the colored links on the secondary timing chain with the timing marks on the VCT assemblies as shown below in the illustration.

    • The timing mark on the intake VCT assembly should align between the 2 consecutive colored links.

    • The timing mark on the exhaust VCT assembly should align with the single colored link.

  14. Install the VCT assemblies and the secondary timing chain onto the camshafts. The timing mark on the exhaust VCT assembly should be approximately in the 11 o'clock position.

  15. NOTE: Use a wrench on the flats of the camshaft to hold the camshafts while tightening the VCT assembly bolts.

    • Install the intake VCT assembly bolts.

      Torque:| Stage 1: 133 lb.in (15 Nm) | Stage 2: 90°

    • Install the exhaust VCT assembly bolt.

      Torque:| Stage 1: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm) | Stage 2: Loosen: 360° | Stage 3: 20 lb.ft (27 Nm) | Stage 4: 150°

  16. Remove and discard the secondary timing chain tensioner shipping clip.

  17. Activate the secondary timing chain tensioner by pressing down on the secondary timing chain and tensioner top shoe until it bottoms out, let go of the tensioner and it will spring up putting tension on the chain.

  18. Install the RH timing chain. Refer to: Timing Chain .
