NOTE: During the removal or installation of components, cap, tape or otherwise appropriately protect all openings and tubes/fittings to prevent the ingress of dirt or other contamination. Remove caps, tape and other protective materials prior to installation.
NOTE: The turbocharger compressor vanes can be damaged by even the smallest particles. When removing any turbocharger or engine air intake system component, ensure that no debris enters the system. Failure to do so may result in damage to the turbocharger.
NOTE: It is recommended that this component be serviced with the vehicle body removed. Refer to BODY . If the body cannot be removed, refer to Cylinder Head - Body On - RH .
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
  3. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to: Battery Cables - 3.5L EcoBoost (272kW/370PS) .
  4. Remove the engine appearance cover.

    • If equipped, remove the bolts.

    • Release the retainer and remove the transmission housing cover.

      Torque: 106 lb.in (12 Nm)

    2. Remove the nut and disconnect the starter motor solenoid control wire.

      Torque: 53 lb.in (6 Nm)

  12. NOTE: Overtightening will damage the oil drain plug and possibly the oil pan.
    NOTE: The drain plug should be removed and install by hand, do not use tools.

    Remove the oil drain plug and drain the engine oil. Install the oil drain plug.

    • Position back the boot and remove the generator nut.

    • Disconnect the coolant hose quick release coupling.

    • Disconnect the hoses. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

    • Release the hose from the retainer.

    • Disconnect the cabin heater coolant pump electrical connector.

    • Remove the cabin heater coolant pump bolts and position hoses aside.

  32. Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner counter clockwise and remove the accessory drive belt.

  33. Remove the A/C compressor belt.

    1. Turn the crankshaft pulley bolt clockwise and feed the stretchy belt tool on to the A/C compressor pulley approximately 180 deg..
    2. Fold the stretchy belt tool under the inside of the A/C compressor belt as shown below.
    3. NOTE: After using the stretchy belt removal tool, it may be necessary to rotate the crankshaft pulley clockwise to remove the A/C compressor belt from the A/C compressor pulley.

      In one quick motion, firmly pull the stretchy belt tool and remove the A/C compressor belt.

  34. Disconnect the HO2S electrical connector and harness retainer.

    1. Disconnect the secondary latch and position out of the way.
    2. Disconnect the spring lock coupling and then disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump supply line. Refer to: Spring Lock Couplings .

  36. Remove and discard the high-pressure fuel pump to fuel rail high-pressure fuel tube retaining bolts. Disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump to fuel rail high-pressure fuel tube flare nuts, then remove and discard the high-pressure fuel pump to fuel rail high-pressure fuel tube.

  37. NOTE: Alternately loosen the high-pressure fuel pump bolts one complete revolution at a time.

    Remove the high-pressure fuel pump bolts and then remove the high-pressure fuel pump.

  59. NOTE: When removing the ignition coil-on-plugs, a slight twisting motion will break the seal and ease removal.

    • Remove the bolts and the ignition coil-on-plugs.

    • Remove the bolts and the CMP sensors.

    NOTE: If the VCT oil control solenoid sticks to the VCT seal, carefully wiggle the valve cover until the bond breaks free or damage to the VCT seal and VCT oil control solenoid may occur.

    Loosen the fasteners and remove the LH valve cover.

    1. Remove the camshaft roller follower and hydraulic lash adjuster assemblies.
    2. Separate the hydraulic lash adjusters from the spring clips on the camshaft roller followers.
    3. Inspect the hydraulic lash adjuster and roller follower for damage. If any damage is found, inspect the camshaft lobes and valves for damage. Replace damaged components as necessary.

    Remove and discard the fuel rail-to-fuel rail high-pressure tube.

  97. NOTE: Place clean shop towels over exposed engine cavities. Carefully remove the towels so foreign material is not dropped into the engine. Any foreign material (including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces) that enters the oil passages or the oil pan, may cause engine failure.
    NOTE: Aluminum surfaces are soft and can be scratched easily. Never place the cylinder head gasket surface, unprotected, on a bench surface
    NOTE: The cylinder head bolts must be discarded and new bolts must be installed. They are tighten-to-yield designed and cannot be reused.

    • Remove and discard the bolts from the RH cylinder head.

    • Remove the cylinder head.

  99. NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of the head gasket.
    NOTE: Observe all warnings or cautions and follow all application directions contained on the packaging.

    Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

  100. Support the cylinder head on a bench with the head gasket side up. Check the cylinder head distortion and the cylinder block distortion. Refer to: Cylinder Head Distortion .
