- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
- Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
- Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to: Battery Cables - 3.5L EcoBoost (272kW/370PS) .
- Remove the engine appearance cover.

- If equipped, remove the bolts.
- Release the retainer and remove the transmission housing cover.

NOTE: Vehicles come with an underbody shield or a skid plate.
- If equipped, remove the pin-type retainers.
- Remove the bolts and the underbody shield.

If equipped, remove the bolts and the skid plate.
Vehicles with late build oil pan
- Remove the oil pan plug and drain the engine oil. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment
Torque: 20 lb.ft (27 Nm)
- Remove the pin-type retainers. Position the wiring harness and transmission tube from the oil pan.
Vehicles with early build oil pan

NOTE: Overtightening will damage the oil drain plug and possibly the oil pan.NOTE: The drain plug should be removed and install by hand, do not use tools.
Remove the oil drain plug and drain the engine oil. Install the oil drain plug.
- Remove the pin-type retainer and position aside the transmission cooler tube.
- Detach the starter motor wiring harness retainer from the oil pan. Remove the bolt and the ground wire.
All vehicles
- Remove and discard the oil filter. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment
- Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connectors and wire retainer.
- Remove the body. Refer to: Body .
- Disconnect the quick connect coupling. Refer to: QUICK RELEASE COUPLING
- Loosen the clamps and remove the CAC -to-TB (throttle body) pipe.

- Disconnect the PCV pressure sensor electrical connector.
- Disconnect the PCV tube quick connect couplings and remove the tube. Refer to: QUICK RELEASE COUPLING
- Disconnect the air bypass tube assembly from the CAC. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Disconnect the quick connect couplings. Refer to: QUICK RELEASE COUPLING
- Position the degas bottle hose out from the air cleaner outlet pipe.

- Disconnect the IAT sensor electrical connector.
- Remove the pin-type retainers and position the wiring harness aside.
- Loosen the clamp at the LH turbocharger.
- Disconnect the LH turbocharger inlet tube from the grommet.
- Loosen the clamp at the RH turbocharger.
- Disconnect the RH turbocharger inlet tube from the grommet.
- Remove the turbocharger inlet tubes, air bypass tube and air cleaner outlet pipe.
- Loosen the clamps. Disconnect the LH turbocharger outlet tube from the bracket grommet and remove the turbocharger outlet tube.

- Loosen the clamps. Disconnect the RH turbocharger outlet tube from the bracket grommet and remove the RH turbocharger outlet tube.
- Remove the nut and position out the transmission cooler tube bracket. Position out the engine wiring harness.
- Disconnect the generator wiring harness from the engine front cover.
-
- Position back the boot and remove the generator nut.
- Disconnect the electrical connector and the wiring retainer.
-
- Remove the pin-type retainer.
- Disconnect the hoses. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Remove the nuts and the CAC bracket and hoses.
-
- Disconnect the coolant hose quick release coupling.
- Disconnect the hoses. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Release the hose from the retainer.
- Disconnect the cabin heater coolant pump electrical connector.
- Remove the cabin heater coolant pump bolts and position hoses aside.
- Disconnect the coolant hoses and remove. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner counter clockwise and remove the accessory drive belt.
- Remove the A/C compressor belt.
- Turn the crankshaft pulley bolt clockwise and feed the stretchy belt tool on to the A/C compressor pulley approximately 180 deg.
- Fold the stretchy belt tool under the inside of the A/C compressor belt as shown below.

NOTE: After using the stretchy belt removal tool, it may be necessary to rotate the crankshaft pulley clockwise to remove the A/C compressor belt from the A/C compressor pulley.
In one quick motion, firmly pull the stretchy belt tool and remove the A/C compressor belt.
- Disconnect the HO2S electrical connector and harness retainer.
- Disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump electrical connector.

- Disconnect the secondary latch and position out of the way.
- Disconnect the spring lock coupling and then disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump supply line. Refer to: Spring Lock Couplings .
- Remove and discard the high-pressure fuel pump to fuel rail high-pressure fuel tube retaining bolts. Disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump to fuel rail high-pressure fuel tube flare nuts, then remove and discard the high-pressure fuel pump to fuel rail high-pressure fuel tube.

NOTE: Alternately loosen the high-pressure fuel pump bolts one complete revolution at a time.
Remove the high-pressure fuel pump bolts and then remove the high-pressure fuel pump.
- Remove and discard the high-pressure fuel pump O-ring seal.
- Remove the high-pressure fuel pump roller tappet.
- Inspect the high-pressure fuel pump roller tappet. If any flat spots or scoring are found, especially in the indicated areas, then inspect the high-pressure fuel pump and the high-pressure fuel pump roller tappet drive lobe. Install new components as needed.
- Loosen the high-pressure fuel pump mounting plate bolt and then remove the mounting plate.
- Disconnect the degas bottle hose at the thermostat.
- Disconnect the throttle body electrical connector and wiring harness retainer.
- Disconnect the wire harness retainers from the intake manifold.
- Remove the PCV tube. Refer to: Spring Lock Couplings
.

- Disconnect the fuel vapor tube to the intake manifold. Refer to: QUICK RELEASE COUPLING
- Disconnect the vacuum hose.
-
- Disconnect the MAPT electrical connector.
- Disconnect the EVAP purge solenoid electrical connector and quick connect coupling. Refer to: QUICK RELEASE COUPLING
- Lift the EVAP purge valve off of the intake manifold mounting tab.
- Remove the bolts and the intake manifold.
-
- Remove and discard the intake manifold gaskets.
- Clean and inspect all of the sealing surfaces of the cylinder heads and the intake manifold.
- Remove the fuel rail insulator.
-
- Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and washer.
- Discard the bolt.
- Using a three leg puller, remove the crankshaft pulley. Use the General Equipment: Three Leg Puller
- Using the special tool, remove and discard the crankshaft front seal. Use Special Service Tool: 303-409 (T92C-6700-CH) Remover, Crankshaft Seal.
- Remove the bolt and the idler pulley.
- Release the clamp, remove the bolts and the thermostat housing.
- Inspect the O-ring seal and replace if necessary.
- Remove the nut, bolt and the generator.
- Remove the generator stud bolt.
- Remove the nuts and the CAC tube bracket.
- Disconnect the oil pressure switch electrical connector and wire retainer.
- Disconnect the oil control solenoid electrical connector and detach the wire harness retainers.

- Remove the oil level indicator.
- Disconnect the VCT oil control solenoid electrical connectors.
- Disconnect the CMP sensor electrical connectors.
- Disconnect the ignition coil-on-plug electrical connectors.
- Detach the wire harness retainers.
- Disconnect the HO2S electrical connector and harness retainer.

- Disconnect the CHT sensor electrical connector.
- Disconnect the CMP sensor electrical connectors.
- Position aside wire retainer. Remove the studbolt and the ground wire.
-
- Disconnect the VCT oil control solenoid electrical connectors.
- Disconnect the ignition coil-on-plug electrical connectors.
- Disconnect the RH TC connector.
- Detach the wire harness retainers and remove the engine wiring harness.

NOTE: When removing the ignition coil-on-plugs, a slight twisting motion will break the seal and ease removal.
- Remove the bolts and the ignition coil-on-plugs.
- Remove the bolts and the CMP sensors.
- Inspect the coil seals for rips, nicks or tears.

NOTE: While removing the valve cover do not apply excessive force to the VCT oil control solenoid or damage may occur.NOTE: If the VCT oil control solenoid sticks to the VCT seal, carefully wiggle the valve cover until the bond breaks free or damage to the VCT seal and VCT oil control solenoid may occur.
Loosen the fasteners and remove the LH valve cover.
- Remove and discard the gasket.

NOTE: While removing the valve cover do not apply excessive force to the VCT oil control solenoid or damage may occur.NOTE: If the VCT oil control solenoid sticks to the VCT seal, carefully wiggle the valve cover until the bond breaks free or damage to the VCT seal and VCT oil control solenoid may occur.
Loosen the fasteners and remove the RH valve cover.
- Remove and discard the gasket.

NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.NOTE: Inspect the VCT solenoid seals. Remove any damaged seals.
Using the special tools, remove and discard the seal(s). Use Special Service Tool: 205-142 (T80T-4000-J) Installer, Differential Bearing Cone., 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) Handle.

NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.NOTE: Inspect the spark plug tube seals. Remove any damaged seals.
Using the special tools, remove and discard the seal(s). Use Special Service Tool: 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) Handle., 303-1247 VCT Spark Plug Tube Seal Remover and Installer.
- Remove the bolts.
- Using a pry tool, locate the 5 pry pads shown below and pry the engine front cover loose and remove.
- Using the special tools, remove and discard the oil pump electrical connector seal. Use Special Service Tool: 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) Handle., 205-142 (T80T-4000-J) Installer, Differential Bearing Cone.

NOTE: Only use a 3M™ Roloc® Bristle Disk (2-in white, part number 07528) to clean the engine front cover. Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes or any other power abrasive disk to clean. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths.
- Clean the engine front cover using a 3M™ Roloc® Bristle Disk (2-in white, part number 07528) in a suitable tool turning at the recommended speed of 15, 000 RPM. Refer to: RTV Sealing Surface Cleaning and Preparation
.
Material: Motorcraft® Silicone Gasket Remover / ZC-30-A
Material: Motorcraft® Metal Surface Prep Wipes / ZC-31-B
Material: Motorcraft® Metal Brake Parts Cleaner / PM-4-A, PM-4-B
- Thoroughly wash the engine front cover to remove any foreign material, including any abrasive particles created during the cleaning process.
- Clean the engine front cover using a 3M™ Roloc® Bristle Disk (2-in white, part number 07528) in a suitable tool turning at the recommended speed of 15, 000 RPM. Refer to: RTV Sealing Surface Cleaning and Preparation
.
- Remove and discard the right turbocharger exhaust flange nuts.
- Remove the LH TC oil supply tube bolts, then remove and discard the TC oil supply tube.
- Remove and discard the turbocharger fitting and oil filter assembly from the engine block.
- Remove the LH TC oil return tube bolts, then remove and discard the TC oil return tube.
- Remove the TC coolant supply tube bolt, then disconnect the TC coolant supply tube.
- Install the crankshaft pulley bolt.

- Rotate the crankshaft clockwise.
- Position the crankshaft sprocket keyway at the 11 o'clock position.
- Verify the timing marks on the VCT units are at the 12:30 (intake) and 11 o'clock (exhaust) positions.

NOTE: The Camshaft Holding Tool will hold the camshafts in the TDC position.
Install Special Service Tool: 303-1655 Tool, Camshaft Holding.
- Remove the bolts and the RH timing chain guide.
- Remove the bolts and the RH timing chain tensioner.
- Remove the RH timing chain tensioner arm.
- Remove the RH timing chain.

NOTE: The Camshaft Holding Tool will hold the camshafts in the TDC position.
Remove Suggested Tool: 303-1655 Tool, Camshaft Holding.
- Verify the timing marks on the VCT units are at the 11:30 (intake) and 1:00 o'clock (exhaust) positions.

NOTE: The Camshaft Holding Tool will hold the camshafts in the TDC position.
Install Special Service Tool: 303-1655 Tool, Camshaft Holding.
- Remove the bolts and the LH timing chain guide.
- Remove the bolts and the LH timing chain tensioner.
- Remove the LH timing chain tensioner arm.
- Remove the LH timing chain.
- Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt.
- Remove and discard the LH VCT unit bolts.
- Remove and discard the LH VCT unit bolts.
- Remove Special Service Tool: 303-1655 Tool, Camshaft Holding.

NOTE: The front camshaft bearing mega cap must be removed first and then the remaining camshaft bearing caps. Failure to follow this direction may result in damage to the engine.
Remove the bolts and the front camshaft bearing mega cap.
- Remove the bolts and the camshaft bearing caps.
- Remove the intake and exhaust camshaft.

NOTE: Mark the location of the roller follower and the hydraulic lash adjuster assembly before removal.
- Remove the camshaft roller follower and hydraulic lash adjuster assemblies.
- Separate the hydraulic lash adjusters from the spring clips on the camshaft roller followers.
- Inspect the hydraulic lash adjuster and roller follower for damage. If any damage is found, inspect the camshaft lobes and valves for damage. Replace damaged components as necessary.
- Remove the fuel supply tube spring lock coupling retainers.
- Disconnect the fuel supply tube. Refer to: Spring Lock Couplings
.
- Remove and discard the fuel rail-to-fuel rail high-pressure tube.
- Disconnect the fuel supply tube. Refer to: QUICK RELEASE COUPLING
- Remove the fuel supply tube spring lock coupling retainer.
- Disconnect the fuel supply tube. Refer to: Spring Lock Couplings

- Remove and discard the LH M6 bolt.

NOTE: Place clean shop towels over exposed engine cavities. Carefully remove the towels so foreign material is not dropped into the engine. Any foreign material (including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces) that enters the oil passages or the oil pan, may cause engine failure.NOTE: Aluminum surfaces are soft and can be scratched easily. Never place the cylinder head gasket surface, unprotected, on a bench surfaceNOTE: The cylinder head bolts must be discarded and new bolts must be installed. They are tighten-to-yield designed and cannot be reused.
- Remove and discard the bolts from the LH cylinder head.
- Remove the cylinder head.
- Remove and discard the LH cylinder head gasket.

NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of the head gasket.NOTE: Observe all warnings or cautions and follow all application directions contained on the packaging.
Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

- Support the cylinder head on a bench with the head gasket side up. Check the cylinder head distortion and the cylinder block distortion. Refer to: Cylinder Head Distortion .
