Exhaust Manifold RH: Removal

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. If equipped, remove the bolts and the transmission housing cover.

  3. NOTE: Vehicles come with an underbody shield or a skid plate.

    If equipped, remove the bolts and the underbody shield.

  5. NOTE: Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

    Remove the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-exhaust intermediate pipe bolts and separate.

  6. NOTE: Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

    Remove and discard the LH catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts.

  7. NOTE: Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

    Remove and discard the RH catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts.

  8. Remove the RH fender splash shield. Refer to: Fender Splash Shield .
    1. NOTE: Apply penetrating oil to the EGR exhaust manifold tube nut before loosening.

      Loosen the EGR valve to exhaust manifold tube nut.

      Material: Motorcraft® Penetrating and Lock Lubricant / XL-1

    2. Remove the EGR valve to exhaust manifold tube bolts.
    3. Remove the support bracket bolt and the EGR valve to exhaust manifold tube.

  9. Remove and discard the EGR valve to exhaust manifold tube gasket.

    • Remove the nuts and the exhaust manifold.

    • Discard the nuts.

    • Remove and discard the exhaust manifold gasket.

    • Remove and discard the exhaust manifold studs.

  10. Clean and inspect the RH exhaust manifold. Refer to: Exhaust Manifold Cleaning and Inspection .
  11. NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These may cause scratches and gouges resulting in leak paths. Use a plastic scraper to clean the sealing surfaces.

    Clean the exhaust manifold mating surface of the cylinder head.
