Cylinder Head RH: Removal

NOTE:
During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
NOTE:
If the cylinder head is replaced, a new secondary timing chain tensioner will need to be installed. Refer to Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) Unit .
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
- Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
- Disconnect the battery ground. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
- Drain the cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
- If equipped, remove the bolts and the transmission housing cover.

NOTE: Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.
- Remove the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-exhaust intermediate pipe bolts and separate.
- Discard the bolts.

NOTE: Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.
Remove and discard the LH catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts.

NOTE: Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.
Remove and discard the RH catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts.
- Remove the following items:
- Remove the RH fender splash shield. Refer to: Fender Splash Shield .
- Remove the RH camshafts. Refer to: Camshafts .

- Loosen the fuel rail to fuel rail high-pressure fuel tube flare nuts and remove.
- Discard the fuel rail to fuel rail high-pressure fuel tube.

NOTE: Apply penetrating oil to the EGR exhaust manifold tube nut before loosening.
Loosen the EGR to exhaust manifold tube nut.
Material: Motorcraft® Penetrating and Lock Lubricant / XL-1
- Remove the support bracket bolt and the EGR to exhaust manifold tube.

- Disconnect the transmission wiring harness retainers from the stud bolts.
- Remove the stud bolts and the heat shield.

- Disconnect the CHT sensor electrical connector.
- Disconnect the RH CMP sensor electrical connectors.
- Detach and disconnect the direct injection wiring harness electrical connector.
- Remove the bolts and the RH CMP sensors.

NOTE: Do not use power tools to remove the bolt or damage to the upper RH timing chain guide may occur.
Remove the bolts and the RH timing chain guide.

NOTE: If the components are to be reinstalled, they must be installed in the same positions. Mark the components for installation into their original locations.
Remove the valve tappets.
- Inspect and install new components as necessary.
- Remove and discard the M6 bolt.

NOTE: Place clean shop towels over exposed engine cavities. Carefully remove the towels so foreign material is not dropped into the engine. Any foreign material (including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces) that enters the oil passages or the oil pan, may cause engine failure.NOTE: Aluminum surfaces are soft and can be scratched easily. Never place the cylinder head gasket surface, unprotected, on a bench surfaceNOTE: The cylinder head bolts must be discarded and new bolts must be installed. They are tighten-to-yield designed and cannot be reused.
Remove and discard the bolts.
- Remove the cylinder head.

NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of the head gasket.
- Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.
- Support the cylinder head on a bench with the head gasket side up and check the cylinder head distortion. Refer to: Cylinder Head Distortion .
- Remove and discard the cylinder head gasket.

NOTE: Place clean, lint-free shop towels over exposed engine cavities. Carefully remove the towels so foreign material is not dropped into the engine. - Check the cylinder block distortion. Refer to: Cylinder Block Distortion .
