Cylinder Head RH: Installation

  1. Install the cylinder head gasket.

  2. NOTE: If the cylinder head is replaced, a new secondary timing chain tensioner will need to be installed.
    NOTE: Install new cylinder head bolts.

    Install the cylinder head and the new bolts.

    Torque: Stage 1: 177 lb.in (20 Nm) | Stage 2: 26 lb.ft (35 Nm) | Stage 3: 90° | Stage 4: 90° | Stage 5: 45°

  3. Install the M6 bolt.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  4. NOTE: The valve tappets must be installed in their original positions.

    Lubricate the valve tappets with clean engine oil and install.

  5. NOTE: Do not use power tools to remove the bolt or damage to the upper RH timing chain guide may occur.

    Install the RH timing chain guide and the bolt.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  6. NOTE: Lubricate the O-ring seals with clean engine oil.

    Install the CMP sensors and the bolts.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

    • Connect and attach the direct injection wiring harness electrical connector.

    • Connect the RH CMP sensor electrical connectors.

    • Connect the CHT sensor electrical connector.

  7. Install the stud bolts and the heat shield.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  8. Connect the transmission wiring harness retainers to the stud bolts.

    1. NOTE: Apply anti-seize to the EGR exhaust manifold tube nut threads before installation.

      Install the EGR to exhaust manifold tube and install the nut finger tight.

      Material: Motorcraft® High Temperature Nickel Anti-Seize Lubricant / XL-2

    2. Install the support bracket bolt finger tight.

    1. Tighten the EGR to exhaust manifold tube nut.

      Torque: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

    2. Tighten the support bracket bolt.

      Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  9. NOTE: Make sure that a new fuel rail to fuel rail high-pressure fuel tube is installed.

    • Install the fuel rail to fuel rail high-pressure fuel tube and finger tight the flare nuts.

    • Tighten the flare nuts in the following 3 stages.

      Torque: Stage 1: 62 lb.in (7 Nm) | Stage 2: 89 lb.in (10 Nm) | Stage 3: If the torque required to tighten any flare nut on the new high-pressure fuel tube reaches or exceeds 75 Nm (55 lb-ft), the high pressure fuel tube must be discarded and replaced with another new high-pressure fuel tube.: 30°

  10. Install the following items:

    1. Install the RH camshafts. Refer to: Camshafts .
    2. Install the RH fender splash shield. Refer to: Fender Splash Shield .

  11. Install the new RH catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts.

    Torque: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

  12. Install the new LH catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts.

    Torque: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

    • Position the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-exhaust intermediate pipe and install the new bolts.

    • Tighten the inner exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-exhaust intermediate pipe bolt.

      Torque: 46 lb.ft (63 Nm)

    • Tighten the outer exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-exhaust intermediate pipe bolt.

      Torque: 46 lb.ft (63 Nm)

  13. Remove the oil pan plug and drain the engine oil. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment

    Torque: 20 lb.ft (27 Nm)

  14. Remove and discard the engine oil filter. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment

  15. NOTE: Do not lubricate the engine oil filter seal.

    Install a new engine oil filter.

    Torque: Stage 1: 44 lb.in (5 Nm) | Stage 2: 180°

  16. If equipped, install the transmission housing cover and the bolts

    Torque: 71 lb.in (8 Nm)

  17. Fill the engine with clean engine oil. Refer to: Specifications .

  18. Fill the cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
  19. Connect the battery ground. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  20. Start and check the exhaust system for leaks.
