Main Control Valve Body: Removal

NOTE: The Solenoid Body Strategy Data Download procedure must be performed if a new main control assembly is installed.
  1. Remove the transmission fluid pan and filter. Refer to: Transmission Fluid Pan, Gasket and Filter .
  2. NOTE: Do not pull on the wiring harness to disconnect the electrical connector or damage to the electrical connector will occur.

    1. Rotate the transmission electrical connector counterclockwise.
    2. Pull the transmission electrical connector out to disconnect.

  3. Pull the transmission bulkhead connector sleeve retainer down to release it. Using the special tool, pull the outer shell of the bulkhead connector sleeve out of the transmission. Use Special Service Tool: 307-717 Remover, Kostal Sleeve.

  4. Inspect the bulkhead connector sleeve seals and install new seals if damage is found.

  5. NOTE: During removal of the main control assembly, the thermal bypass valve or blank plug can fall out of the transmission case. Damage to the valve or plug can occur if the valve or plug falls out.

    Remove the bolts from the main control assembly and slowly lower the main control and remove the thermal bypass valve or blank plug.

    1. NOTE: Vehicles without transmission fluid warmer.

      Thermal bypass valve.

    2. NOTE: Vehicles equipped with transmission fluid warmer.

      Blank plug

    3. Inspect the thermal bypass valve or blank plug for damage and discard the valve or plug if damage is found.

    1. Remove and discard the main control-to-case gasket.
    2. Remove the front pump adapter seal.

    1. Inspect the transmission case and main control surfaces for nicks, cracks and blocked fluid passages.
    2. Inspect the bias spring to make sure it is positioned correctly in the transmission case.
