Turbocharger RH: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2020 Ford F-150. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: The turbocharger compressor vanes can be damaged by even the smallest particles. When removing any turbocharger or engine air intake system component, ensure that no debris enters the system. Failure to do so may result in damage to the turbocharger.
NOTE: Special attention needs to be given to the sealing ports for the oil feed, the oil drain, and the coolant lines, on turbocharged engines. The sealing ports must be totally clean and free from O-ring residue, have no damage to the sealing surface and the lines to ensure that there are no leaks or repeat repairs.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Remove the engine appearance cover retainers, then remove the engine appearance cover.

  3. If equipped, remove the retainers and the transmission housing cover.

  4. NOTE: Vehicles come with a skid plate or a splash shield.
    NOTE: Skid plate shown, splash shield similar.

    If equipped, remove the bolts and the skid plate or splash shield.

  5. Drain the cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
  6. Remove the right front fender splash shield. Refer to: Fender Splash Shield .
  7. Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe RH. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe RH .
  8. Remove the right charge air cooler (CAC) intake pipe. Refer to: Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Intake Pipe .
  9. Remove the turbocharger oil supply tube bolts, then remove the turbocharger oil supply tube.

  10. NOTE: Inspect the turbocharger tube and the sealing surfaces. Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area. Use brake cleaner and a NYLON brush to clean. DO NOT USE A METAL BRUSH; DAMAGE TO SEALING AREA WILL RESULT IN LEAKS.

    Remove and discard the turbocharger oil supply tube O-ring seals and the turbocharger oil supply tube oil filter.

  11. Remove the turbocharger exhaust flange nuts.

  13. Remove the turbocharger coolant return tube bolt, then disconnect the turbocharger coolant return tube and position out of the way.

  14. NOTE: Inspect the turbocharger tube and the sealing surfaces. Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area. Use brake cleaner and a NYLON brush to clean. DO NOT USE A METAL BRUSH; DAMAGE TO SEALING AREA WILL RESULT IN LEAKS.

    Remove and discard the turbocharger coolant return tube O-ring seal.

  15. Disconnect the clamp and the turbocharger wastegate control hose.

  16. Remove the turbocharger oil return tube bolts, then remove the turbocharger oil return tube.

  17. NOTE: Inspect for blockage in the turbocharger tube. Check the tube, the sealing surfaces and the flange for flatness and damage. Use brake cleaner and a NYLON brush to clean. DO NOT USE A METAL BRUSH; DAMAGE TO SEALING AREA WILL RESULT IN LEAKS.
    NOTE: Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area. Use brake cleaner and a NYLON brush to clean. DO NOT USE A METAL BRUSH; DAMAGE TO SEALING AREA WILL RESULT IN LEAKS.

    Remove and discard the turbocharger oil return tube O-ring seal.

  18. Remove and discard the turbocharger oil return tube tube-to-engine block gasket.

  19. Remove the turbocharger coolant supply tube bolt.

  23. NOTE: Remove the turbocharger coolant supply tube from the engine block while removing the turbocharger.
    NOTE: Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

    Remove the turbocharger nuts, then remove the turbocharger.
