Turbocharger LH: Installation

  1. If the turbocharger coolant supply tube was removed from the turbocharger, then install a NEW turbocharger end coolant supply tube O-ring seal. Lubricate the NEW O-ring seal with clean engine coolant. Refer to Specifications

  2. NOTE: Carefully use a nylon brush to remove the old O-ring residue and use brake cleaner to rinse the O-ring residue out of the turbocharger tube to turbocharger O-ring bore. Inspect the area for deep scratches and gouges. DO-NOT USE A METAL BRUSH; DAMAGE TO SEALING AREA WILL RESULT IN LEAKS.
    NOTE: Install the turbocharger, then loosely install the turbocharger retainers. Install the turbocharger coolant supply tube to the engine block while installing the turbocharger.

    If removed, install the turbocharger coolant supply tube to the turbocharger, then install and tighten the turbocharger coolant supply tube bolt.

    Material: Motorcraft® Metal Brake Parts Cleaner / PM-4-A, PM-4-B

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  3. Install the NEW the turbocharger exhaust flange gasket.

  4. If removed, install and tighten the turbocharger mounting stud.

    Torque: 102 lb.in (11.5 Nm)

  5. Install the NEW turbocharger gasket.

  6. Install a NEW turbocharger coolant supply tube O-ring seal. Lubricate the NEW O-ring seal with clean engine coolant. Refer to: Specifications

  8. Install and tighten the turbocharger coolant supply tube bolt.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (24 Nm)

  9. Install the NEW turbocharger oil return tube-to-engine block gasket.

  10. Install a NEW turbocharger oil return tube O-ring seal, then lubricate with clean engine oil. Refer to: Specifications .

  11. NOTE: Carefully use a nylon brush to remove the old O-ring residue and use brake cleaner to rinse the O-ring residue out of the turbocharger O-ring bore. Inspect the area for deep scratches and gouges. DO-NOT USE A METAL BRUSH; DAMAGE TO SEALING AREA WILL RESULT IN LEAKS.

    Install the turbocharger oil return tube, then install and tighten the turbocharger oil return tube bolts.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  12. Install the NEW turbocharger oil supply tube O-ring seals and the NEW turbocharger oil supply tube oil filter. Lubricate the NEW turbocharger oil supply tube O-ring seals with clean engine oil. Refer to: Specifications .

NOTE: Carefully use a nylon brush to remove the old O-ring residue and use brake cleaner to rinse the O-ring residue out of the turbocharger tube to turbocharger O-ring bore and the turbocharger tube to engine O-ring bore. Inspect the area for deep scratches and gouges. DO-NOT USE A METAL BRUSH; DAMAGE TO SEALING AREA WILL RESULT IN LEAKS.

    Install the turbocharger oil supply tube, then loosely install the oil supply tube bolt.

  14. NOTE: Carefully use a nylon brush to remove the old O-ring residue and use brake cleaner to rinse the O-ring residue out of the turbocharger tube to turbocharger O-ring bore and the turbocharger tube to engine O-ring bore.     Connect the turbocharger oil supply tube to the turbocharger, then install and tighten the turbocharger oil supply tube bolt.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  15. Tighten the turbocharger oil supply tube bolt.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  16. Install and tighten the turbocharger mounting stud.

    Torque: 106 lb.in (12 Nm)

  17. Loosely install the upper left turbocharger nut.

  18. Tighten the turbocharger retainers in the following sequence.

    1. Tighten the bolt.

      Torque: 44 lb.ft (60 Nm)

    2. Tighten the nut.

      Torque: 44 lb.ft (60 Nm)

    3. Tighten the nut.

      Torque: 27 lb.ft (37 Nm)

    4. Re-tighten the bolt.

      Torque: 44 lb.ft (60 Nm)

    5. Re-tighten the nut.

      Torque: 44 lb.ft (60 Nm)

    6. Re-tighten the nut.

      Torque: 27 lb.ft (37 Nm)

  19. Install the NEW EGR tube gaskets.

  20. Install the EGR tube, then install and tighten the EGR tube retainers.

    Torque: Nuts : 89 lb.in (10 Nm) Bolts : 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  21. Install the air tube bracket, then install and the air tube bracket retainers.

    Torque: Nut : 53 lb.in (6 Nm) Bolt : 53 lb.in (6 Nm)

  22. Connect the turbocharger wastegate control hose and clamp.

  23. Install a NEW turbocharger coolant return tube O-ring seal. Lubricate the NEW O-ring seal with clean engine coolant. Refer to Specifications

  24. NOTE: Carefully use a nylon brush to remove the old O-ring residue and use brake cleaner to rinse the O-ring residue out of the turbocharger O-ring bore. Inspect the area for deep scratches and gouges. DO-NOT USE A METAL BRUSH; DAMAGE TO SEALING AREA WILL RESULT IN LEAKS.

    Install and connect the turbocharger coolant return tube and clamp, then install and tighten the turbocharger coolant return tube bolt.

    Material: Motorcraft® Metal Brake Parts Cleaner / PM-4-A, PM-4-B

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

    • Apply high temperature nickel anti-seize lubricant to the turbocharger exhaust flange studbolt threads.

    • Install and tighten the turbocharger exhaust flange studbolts.

      Material: Motorcraft® High Temperature Nickel Anti-Seize Lubricant / XL-2

      Torque: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

  25. Install and evenly tighten the turbocharger exhaust flange nuts.

    Torque: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

  26. Install the left charge air cooler intake pipe. Refer to: Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Intake Pipe .
  27. Install the air cleaner outlet pipe LH. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe LH .
  28. Install the left front fender splash shield. Refer to: Fender Splash Shield .
  29. If equipped, install the skid plate or splash shield, then install and tighten the bolts.

    Torque: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

  30. If equipped, install the transmission housing cover, then install and tighten the retainers.

    Torque: 71 lb.in (8 Nm)

  31. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling And Bleeding
  32. Install the engine appearance cover, then install and tighten the engine appearance cover retainers.

    Torque: 42 lb.in (4.8 Nm)

  33. Check and top off the engine oil level as needed. Refer to: Specifications .
  34. Start and check for leaks.
