High-Pressure Fuel Pump: Removal
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2020 Ford F-150. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Do not loosen any fittings or plugs on the high-pressure fuel pump.
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
- Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
- Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
- Remove the intake manifold. Refer to: Intake Manifold .
- Drain the cooling system. Refer to ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, VACUUM FILLING AND BLEEDING
- Disconnect the quick release coupling. Release the coolant hose clamps, disconnect the coolant hoses, then remove the coolant tube. Refer to QUICK RELEASE COUPLING
- Detach the wiring harness retainers.
- Remove the retainers, then remove the high-pressure fuel pump shield.
-
NOTE: When removing or installing the fuel injection pump noise insulator, spreading the openings will reduce the risk of damage.
Remove the fuel injection pump noise insulator.
- Remove the spring lock coupling retaining clips.
- Detach the wiring harness retainers. Disconnect the fuel supply quick connect couplings. Disconnect the fuel supply spring lock couplings.. Refer to: Spring Lock Couplings
.
- Remove the retainers, then remove and the fuel supply manifold.
- Disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump electrical connector.
-
NOTE: To release the fuel pressure in the high-pressure fuel tube, wrap the high-pressure fuel tube flare nuts with a shop towel to absorb any residual fuel pressure during the loosening of high-pressure fuel tube flare nuts.
Disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump-to-fuel rail high-pressure fuel tube flare nuts, then remove and discard the high-pressure fuel pump-to-fuel rail high-pressure fuel tube.
-
NOTE: Alternately loosen the high-pressure fuel pump nuts one complete revolution at a time.
Remove the high-pressure fuel pump nuts and then remove the high-pressure fuel pump.
- Remove and discard the high-pressure fuel pump O-ring seal.
- Remove the high-pressure fuel pump tappet.
- Inspect the high-pressure fuel pump roller tappet. If any flat spots or scoring are found, especially in the indicated areas, then inspect the high-pressure fuel pump and the high-pressure fuel pump roller tappet drive lobe. Install new components as needed.
