High-Pressure Fuel Pump: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2020 Ford F-150. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Do not loosen any fittings or plugs on the high-pressure fuel pump.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
  3. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  4. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to: Intake Manifold .
  5. Drain the cooling system. Refer to ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, VACUUM FILLING AND BLEEDING
  6. Disconnect the quick release coupling. Release the coolant hose clamps, disconnect the coolant hoses, then remove the coolant tube. Refer to QUICK RELEASE COUPLING

  7. Detach the wiring harness retainers.

  8. Remove the retainers, then remove the high-pressure fuel pump shield.

  9. NOTE: When removing or installing the fuel injection pump noise insulator, spreading the openings will reduce the risk of damage.

    Remove the fuel injection pump noise insulator.

  10. Remove the spring lock coupling retaining clips.

  11. Detach the wiring harness retainers. Disconnect the fuel supply quick connect couplings. Disconnect the fuel supply spring lock couplings.. Refer to: Spring Lock Couplings .

  12. Remove the retainers, then remove and the fuel supply manifold.

  13. Disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump electrical connector.

  14. NOTE: To release the fuel pressure in the high-pressure fuel tube, wrap the high-pressure fuel tube flare nuts with a shop towel to absorb any residual fuel pressure during the loosening of high-pressure fuel tube flare nuts.

    Disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump-to-fuel rail high-pressure fuel tube flare nuts, then remove and discard the high-pressure fuel pump-to-fuel rail high-pressure fuel tube.

  15. NOTE: Alternately loosen the high-pressure fuel pump nuts one complete revolution at a time.

    Remove the high-pressure fuel pump nuts and then remove the high-pressure fuel pump.

  16. Remove and discard the high-pressure fuel pump O-ring seal.

  17. Remove the high-pressure fuel pump tappet.

  18. Inspect the high-pressure fuel pump roller tappet. If any flat spots or scoring are found, especially in the indicated areas, then inspect the high-pressure fuel pump and the high-pressure fuel pump roller tappet drive lobe. Install new components as needed.
