Valve Cover RH: Removal

NOTE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  3. Drain the engine cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
  4. Remove the following items:

    1. Intake manifold. Refer to: Intake Manifold .
    2. Right hand CAC intake pipe. Refer to: Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Intake Pipe .
    3. Right hand ignition coil-on-plugs. Refer to: Ignition Coil-On-Plug .

    1. Release the clamp and disconnect the radiator hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
    2. Disconnect the coolant hose.

    1. Release the clamp and disconnect the heater hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
    2. Position the coolant pipe aside.

  7. Remove the nuts and position the bracket and heater hose aside.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

    1. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connectors.
    2. Detach the engine wiring harness retainers.

    1. Detach the vacuum hose retainer.
    2. Remove the vacuum solenoid bolt.

      Torque: 62 lb.in (7 Nm)

  10. Loosen the fasteners and remove the valve cover.

    1. Remove and discard the gasket.
    2. Clean the valve cover gasket groove with soap and water or a suitable solvent.

  12. Inspect the spark plug seals. Remove any damaged seals using the special tools. Use Special Service Tool: 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) Handle, 303-1247 VCT Spark Plug Tube Seal Remover and Installer.

  13. Clean and prepare the RTV sealing surface. Refer to: RTV Sealing Surface Cleaning and Preparation .
