Oil Pan: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2020 Ford F-150. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.

4x2/4x4 

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  3. Remove the engine oil filter and drain the engine oil. Refer to: Engine Oil Draining and Filling .
  4. Remove the oil level indicator.

  5. NOTE: If equipped.

    Remove the bolts and the skid plate.

  9. Remove and discard the stabilizer bar bracket nuts.

    • Allow the stabilizer bar to swing downward.

  11. NOTE: Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

    Remove the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-exhaust intermediate pipe bolts and separate.

  12. NOTE: Only use hand tools when removing the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts or damage to the transmission mount can occur.

    Loosen the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts.

  13. NOTE: Only use hand tools when loosening the engine mount through bolts or damage to the engine mount-to-cylinder block bracket can occur.
    NOTE: Front drive shaft removed from graphic for clarity.

    Remove and discard the LH engine mount through bolt.

  14. NOTE: Only use hand tools when removing the engine mount nuts, stud bolts or damage to the engine mount can occur.

    Remove and discard the RH engine mount nuts.

    • Remove the studs.

  15. Using an adjustable stand, raise the engine 50 mm (2 in). Use the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle Stands

  16. Install a 38 mm (1.5 in) X 38 mm (1.5 in) X 76 mm (3 in) wood block between the RH engine mount and the frame perch.

    1. Using the adjustable stand, lower the engine onto the wood block. Use the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle Stands
    2. Remove the stand.

  18. Using a holding device, hold the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.

    1. WARNING: Install a new steering column shaft bolt. Reuse could result in bolt failure and loss of vehicle control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).

      Remove and discard the steering column shaft bolt.

    2. Separate the steering column shaft U-joint from the steering gear.

  22. Remove and discard the lower front axle carrier mounting bushing bolt.

  23. Remove and discard the axle shaft housing carrier mounting bushing nut and the bolt.

  24. NOTE: After loosening the bolt, it may be necessary to reposition the axle assembly to prevent interference with the steering components when removing the bolt.

    Remove and discard the upper front axle carrier mounting bushing nut and the bolt.

  25. NOTE: The axle can rest on the frame and the stand can be removed if necessary.

    Using an adjustable stand, lower the axle to allow clearance for the oil pan to be removed. Use the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle Stands

    4x2/4x4 

    1. Remove the pin-type retainer.
    2. Remove the bolt and ground wire.

    1. Remove the wiring harness retainer nut.

  28. Remove the transmission fluid cooler tube bracket nut.

  29. Detach the retainer from the oil pan and position the coolant tubes aside.

    1. Using a large flat-bladed screwdriver and the indicated pry pads, release the sealer and separate the oil pan from the bottom of the engine.
    2. NOTE: Do not reuse the oil pans sealed by Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone. Oil pans sealed by Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone are to be removed and discarded. The replacement oil pan will have a press-in-place gasket.

      Remove and discard the oil pan if it is sealed with Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone.

  32. If equipped, remove and discard the oil pan press-in-place gasket.
