Cylinder Head LH: Removal

NOTE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
  3. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  4. Drain the cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
  5. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to: Intake Manifold .
  6. Disconnect the quick release coupling. Release the coolant hose clamps, disconnect the coolant hoses, then remove the coolant tube. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling . . Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

  7. Detach the wiring harness retainers.

  8. Remove the retainers, then remove the high-pressure fuel pump shield.

  9. NOTE: When removing or installing the fuel injection pump noise insulator, spreading the openings will reduce the risk of damage.

    Remove the fuel injection pump noise insulator.

  10. Detach the spring lock coupling retaining clips.

  11. Detach the wiring harness retainers. Disconnect the fuel supply quick connect couplings. Disconnect the fuel supply spring lock couplings. Refer to: QUICK RELEASE COUPLING . . Refer to: Spring Lock Couplings .

  12. Remove the retainers, then remove and the fuel supply manifold.

  13. Remove the following items:

    1. Refer to: Camshaft LH .
    2. Refer to: Turbocharger LH .

  14. Remove the bolt, the stud bolt and the wiring harness grounds.

    1. Release the clamp and disconnect the coolant hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
    2. NOTE: Do not pry the cylinder head to coolant outlet connector behind the bracket. If necessary, use gripping pliers to pull the cylinder head to coolant outlet connector from the cylinder head.

      Remove the bolt and the cylinder head to coolant outlet connector hose assembly.

  15. Inspect the O-ring and replace if necessary.

    • Loosen the fuel rail-to-fuel rail high-pressure fuel tube flare nuts.

    • Remove and discard the high-pressure fuel tube.

    • Remove and discard the cylinder head bolts.

    • Remove the cylinder head.

  16. Remove and discard the cylinder head gasket.

    • Clean and inspect the cylinder head-to-cylinder block mating surfaces of both the cylinder head and the cylinder block.
