Engine Front Cover: Installation

  1. Prime the oil pump. Add 2 tablespoons of oil to the square oil pump hole and rotate the oil pump by hand.

    Material: Motorcraft ® SAE 10W-30 Super Duty Diesel Motor Oil / XO-10W30-QSD (WSS-M2C171-E)

  2. Position the crankshaft drive flats level to aid in installing the engine front cover.

  3. Install the engine front cover gaskets.

  4. NOTE: Failure to properly align the engine front cover to the oil pan rail may result in engine damage.
    NOTE: Use care when installing the engine front cover not to scratch the crankshaft sealing surface.
    NOTE: Use the Gauge Bar to align the bottom of the engine front cover to the oil pan rail prior to torquing the engine front cover.

    • Install the engine front cover.

    • Support the oil pump gerotor assembly in the engine front cover bore.

    • Position the engine front cover assembly over the crankshaft without contacting the front sealing surface.

    • Align the oil pump gerotor assembly with the crankshaft drive flats.

    • Align the engine front cover assembly locating pin.

    • Slide the front cover assembly over the crankshaft post to the cylinder block.

    • Hand start bolt number 1 and 2.

    • Using the Gauge Bar, align the bottom of the engine front cover to the oil pan rail. Use Special Service Tool: 307-400 Gauge Bar.

    • Install the remaining engine front cover bolts.

      Torque: 18 lb.ft (24 Nm)

    • As a post-check, using the special tool and feeler gauge, verify alignment of the engine front cover to the oil pan rail is within 0.25 mm (0.009 in). Use Special Service Tool: 307-400 Gauge Bar. Use the General Equipment: Feeler Gauge

    • If the engine front cover alignment is not with specification, loosen the bolts and repeat the previous step.

  5. Refer to: Crankshaft Front Seal .
  6. Connect the coolant engine fill hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

  7. Connect the battery wire harness to the bracket.

  8. Position back the lower radiator hose and install the clip.

  9. Position back the battery wire harness and install the bolts.

    Torque: 106 lb.in (12 Nm)

  10. Install the retainer to the power steering line bracket.

    Torque: 44 lb.in (5 Nm)

  11. Connect the CMP sensor electrical connector and the retainers.

  12. NOTE: Only one tube shown.

    Install the new transmission oil cooler coolant O-rings and lubricate.

    Material: Motorcraft ® Orange Concentrated Antifreeze/Coolant / VC-3-B (WSS-M97B44-D)

  13. Install the transmission oil cooler coolant tube and stud bolt.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  14. Install the transmission oil cooler coolant tube, bolt and nut.

    Torque:

    Nut: 115 lb.in (13 Nm)

    Bolt: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  15. Connect the transmission cooler coolant hoses.

  16. Install the stator standoffs.

    Torque: 17 lb.ft (23 Nm)

  17. Install the A/C compressor and the bolts.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  18. NOTE: Only use the specified material to lubricate the seals.

    Install new O-ring seals and connect the A/C inlet and outlet lines.

    Material: Motorcraft ® PAG Refrigerant Compressor Oil / YN-12-D (WSH-M1C231-B)

    Torque: 159 lb.in (18 Nm)

  19. Connect the A/C electrical connector and the retainers.

  20. Position back the wire harness and install the bracket bolt and the ground wire bolt.

    Torque: 22 lb.ft (30 Nm)

  21. Install the following items:

    1. Refer to: Brake Vacuum Pump .
    2. Refer to: Cooling Fan Drive Assembly .
    3. Refer to: Accessory Drive Belt Tensioner .
    4. Refer to: Accessory Drive Belt .
    5. Refer to: Cooling Fan .

  22. Install the cooling fan stator and nuts.

    Torque: 159 lb.in (18 Nm)

  23. Connect the coolant hose retainer.

  24. Install the following items:

    1. Refer to: Cooling Module .
    2. Refer to: Upper Oil Pan .
