Reductant Tank Draining

Draining
All Vehicles
NOTE:
Selective Catalyst Reduction (SRC)/Reductant system components are very sensitive to external contamination. Any possible measure should be taken to prevent contamination from entering the system while servicing it.
NOTE:
Discard the drained reductant fluid. Always refill the reductant tank with new reductant fluid to avoid reductant system contamination.
NOTE:
Fresh reductant fluid should be the only lubricant used in the assembly of these components. The use of any other lubricant ESPECIALLY PETROLEUM BASED LUBES may cause damage to the system.
NOTE:
Reductant fluid can corrode some metals. Reductant fluid must be stored and transported carefully. Reductant fluid must be disposed of according to local regulations.
NOTE:
Petroleum contamination will cause permanent damage to the reductant system.
- Remove the reductant tank filler cap.
Inboard Frame Mounted Reductant Tank
NOTE: Equipment used to drain the reductant fluid must be clean and not previously used with any petroleum based products to avoid reductant system contamination. Petroleum contamination will cause permanent damage to the reductant system.NOTE: The reductant tank can also be drained through the reductant tank filler hose opening in the tank. The reductant tank may need to be lowered to gain access to the reductant tank filler hose opening. - Using a free of contamination, clean drain hose, insert the drain hose into the reductant tank filler hose until it stops inside the reductant tank.
Outboard Frame Mounted Reductant Tank
NOTE: Equipment used to drain the reductant fluid must be clean and not previously used with any petroleum based products to avoid reductant system contamination. Petroleum contamination will cause permanent damage to the reductant system.NOTE: On some chassis cab vehicles, the outboard frame mounted reductant tank can be mounted on the inboard side of the frame rail.NOTE: The outboard frame mounted reductant tank may need to be partially lowered to gain access to the reductant tank filler hose opening. - With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
- Disconnect the reductant tank filler hose from the reductant tank.
- Using a free of contamination, clean drain hose, insert the drain hose into the reductant tank filler hose tank opening.

Petroleum contamination will cause permanent damage to the reductant system.NOTE: Discard the drained reductant fluid. Always refill the reductant tank with new reductant fluid to avoid reductant system contamination. - Using a fluid Extractor such as a Deluxe 6-Gallon DEF Extractor, Rotunda 391-24226 or equivalent, drain as much of the reductant fluid as possible from the reductant tank into a suitable container. Discard the drained reductant fluid.
