Shock Absorber and Spring Assembly: Installation

  1. Install the shock absorber and the upper mount. Use the General Equipment: Spring Compressor

  2. NOTE: If the individual spring and/or shock components are not being serviced, continue to the installation procedure.
    NOTE: For reference during assembly, index the upper mount, spring and shock absorber.

    Compress the spring until the tension is released from the shock absorber. Use the General Equipment: Spring Compressor

  3. NOTE: Use the hex-holding feature to prevent the shock rod from turning while installing the nut.

    While holding the shock rod, install the new shock absorber and the shock rod nut.

    Torque: 41 lb.ft (55 Nm)

    1. Install the shock absorber and spring assembly.
    2. Position the lower arm up.

  4. Install the 3 new shock absorber and spring assembly upper nuts.

    Torque: 52 lb.ft (70 Nm)

  5. Install the 2 new shock absorber and spring assembly lower nuts.

    Torque: 66 lb.ft (90 Nm)

  6. NOTE: Use the hex-holding feature to prevent the stud from turning while installing the nut.

    Install the new front stabilizer link upper nut.

    Torque: 59 lb.ft (80 Nm)

    1. Install the wheel knuckle.
    2. Install the new lower ball joint nut.

      Torque: 76 lb.ft (103 Nm)

  7. Install the new upper ball joint nut.

    Torque: 46 lb.ft (63 Nm)

  8. Install the 3 IWE bolts.

    Torque: 106 lb.in (12 Nm)

  9. Position the brake hose bracket and install the brake hose bracket bolt.

    Torque: 22 lb.ft (30 Nm)

  10. Position the tie rod end and install the new tie rod end nut.

    Torque: 76 lb.ft (103 Nm)

  11. NOTE: While placing the wheel bearing and wheel hub into the wheel knuckle, hold the CV outboard joint with outboard pressure to maintain spline engagement with the IWE actuator gear.

    Using a hand vacuum pump apply and hold 24inHg of vacuum to the IWE actuator through the large port on IWE to retract the actuator.

  12. NOTE: Measure the depth of the CV shaft threaded end to the inner bearing race (shown in illustration). The minimum depth is 15.5 mm (0.61 in). If the depth is less than 15.5 mm (0.61 in) rotate the CV shaft to clear a binding condition between the IWE and CV splines. Installing the axle nut and tightening without the proper depth of protrusion will result in damage to the IWE.

    Measure the CV shaft threaded end to the inner bearing race.

  13. NOTE: Verify the spline engagement by checking for spline lash before installing the wheel hub nut or component damage may occur.
    NOTE: With vacuum still applied to the IWE.

    1. Install the new the axle nut.

      Torque: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

    2. Verify free rotation of the hub with no CV joint rotation. No clicking or grinding noise should be present.
    3. Release vacuum and rotate bearing slightly to engage actuator (may hear single click when IWE system engages). Verify hub and CV joint rotate together.

  14. NOTE: If the dust cap to bearing interface is damaged, damaged parts must be replaced.

    Install the dust cap.

    1. Position the wheel speed sensor wire and clip the 2 wheel speed sensor wire retainers.
    2. Clip the wheel speed sensor wire to the brake hose.
    3. Install the wheel speed sensor wire bracket bolt.

      Torque: 106 lb.in (12 Nm)

  15. Install the brake disc. Refer to: Brake Disc .
  16. NOTE: The wheel speed sensor electrical connector is located in the engine compartment secured to the fender apron.

    Connect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
