Transmission - 6.2L V8: Installation

All vehicles 

  1. Inspect the back of the engine to be sure both dowel pins are in the engine. If the dowel pins are not in the engine, install new dowel pins as needed. If installing the same transmission that was removed, remove the dowel pins from the transmission and install them in the engine. Rotate the flexplate to align the 2 slots at the 6 o'clock position.

  2. NOTE: Prior to installation of the transmission, lubricate the torque converter pilot hub or damage to the torque converter or the engine crankshaft can occur.

    Lubricate the torque converter pilot hub with multi-purpose grease.

    Material: Motorcraft ® Multi-Purpose Grease Spray / XL-5-A (ESB-M1C93-B)

  3. Align the paint dot on the torque converter in the 12 o'clock position.

  4. NOTE: Be sure to position the Torque Converter Retainer in the proper position to ensure the torque converter is held securely in place.

    Install the special tool.

    Install Special Service Tool: 307-346 (T97T-7902-A) Retainer, Torque Converter.

  5. NOTE: Secure the transmission to the transmission jack with a safety strap.
    NOTE: Make sure the transmission jack makes contact on the outer ribs of the transmission fluid pan.

    Using a high-lift transmission jack, position the transmission into the vehicle behind the engine and remove the special tool.

    Remove Special Service Tool: 307-346 (T97T-7902-A) Retainer, Torque Converter.

  6. Position the fuel line bracket over the torque converter housing and install the transmission on the dowel pins on the back of the engine. Install the upper bellhousing bolts.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  7. Install the RH transmission-to-engine bolts.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  8. Install a new transmission fluid filler tube O-ring (391308). Lubricate it with clean transmission fluid.

    Material: Motorcraft ® MERCON ® LV Automatic Transmission Fluid / XT-10-QLVC (MERCON ® LV) (WSS-M2C938-A)

  9. Install the transmission fluid filler tube in the transmission and install the lower transmission fluid filler tube bolt.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  10. Inspect the transmission fluid tube backing rings and seals for damage and install new backing rings or seals if necessary.

    1. Seal (7D285)

      Material: Motorcraft ® MERCON ® LV Automatic Transmission Fluid / XT-10-QLVC (MERCON ® LV) (WSS-M2C938-A)

    2. Backing ring (7J324)

  11. Position the transmission fluid cooler tubes in the transmission case and install the bolt.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

    Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) vehicles 

  12. Install the transfer case. Refer to: Transfer Case .

    Vehicles equipped with Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) and a manual shift transfer case 

  13. Position the transfer case linkage bracket and install the nuts.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

    1. Position the transfer case linkage and Attach the rotating slide snap ring (7H181).
    2. Connect transfer case linkage to selector lever.

    Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicles equipped with a slip yoke 

  14. If required, install new transmission support insulator studs.

    Torque: 55 lb.ft (75 Nm)

  15. If removed. Install the transmission support insulator and new transmission support insulator-to-transmission bolts.

    Torque: 76 lb.ft (103 Nm)

  16. Install the rear driveshaft. Refer to: Rear Driveshaft .

    Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicles equipped with a fixed yoke 

  17. If required, install new transmission support insulator studs.

    Torque: 55 lb.ft (75 Nm)

  18. If removed. Install the transmission support insulator and bracket and the new bolts.

    Torque: 41 lb.ft (55 Nm)

    1. Position the driveshaft on the flange, align the driveshaft flange yoke index mark made during removal.
    2. Install the new center bearing mounting bolts.

      Torque: 52 lb.ft (70 Nm)

  19. Install the new bearing straps (4A254) and the new bolts.

    Torque: 46 lb.ft (63 Nm)

    Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicles 

  20. Install the Transmission Support Crossmember. Refer to: Transmission Support Crossmember .

    All vehicles 

  21. NOTE: Only use hand tools when installing the engine support insulator nuts or damage to the engine support insulator may occur.

    Install the new LH engine support insulator nuts.

    Torque: 148 lb.ft (200 Nm)

  22. NOTE: The RH engine support insulator studs may come out of the insulator while removing the nuts. Install new RH engine support insulator studs if the studs come out.

    If required, install the new RH engine support insulator stud (W790018).

    Torque: 59 lb.ft (80 Nm)

  23. NOTE: Only use hand tools when installing the engine support insulator nuts or damage to the engine support insulator may occur.

    Install the new RH engine support insulator nuts.

    Torque: 148 lb.ft (200 Nm)

  24. Position the wiring harness and attach the wiring harness retainers on the transmission case.

    1. Position the selector lever cable bracket and install the bolts.

      Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

    2. Connect the selector lever cable to the manual control lever.

    1. Attach the wiring harness retainer to the transmission case.
    2. Connect the transmission vehicle harness connector and lock the transmission vehicle harness connector by rotating the outer shell clockwise.

  25. Install the flexplate inspection cover and the bolts.

    Torque: 26 lb.ft (35 Nm)

  26. Install the new torque converter nuts (W715618).

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  27. Install the rubber torque converter access cover.

  28. Install the following items:

    1. Refer to: Dual Catalytic Converter Y-Pipe .
    2. Refer to: Starter Motor .

  29. Adjust the selector lever cable. Refer to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment - 6-Speed Automatic Transmission - 6R140 .
  30. NOTE: If transmission was drained, fill the transmission with clean transmission fluid.
    NOTE: If transmission was not drained, install the transmission fluid level indicator then check and adjust the transmission fluid level.

    Fill the transmission with clean transmission fluid. Refer to: Transmission Fluid Drain and Refill .

  31. If a new main control was installed, the solenoid body strategy will need to be updated. Refer to: Transmission Strategy Download .
  32. After completing the repairs, use the scan tool to perform the Misfire Monitor Neutral Profile Correction procedure, following the on-screen instructions.
