Output Shaft Seal - 4WD, Vehicles With: Flanged Yoke: Installation

All vehicles 

  1. Clean any loose Loctite ® from the output shaft and output shaft nut threads.
  2. Using the special tools, install the output shaft seal.

    Use Special Service Tool: 307-650 Installer, Output Shaft Seal., 205-440 Remover/Installer, Drive Pinion Oil Seal.

  3. Inspect the output shaft nut O-ring for damage and install a new output shaft nut if necessary. Lubricate the output shaft nut O-ring with clean transmission fluid.

    Material: Motorcraft ® MERCON ® LV Automatic Transmission Fluid / XT-10-QLVC (MERCON ® LV) (WSS-M2C938-A)

  4. Place the manual control lever in PARK and install the output shaft nut using the special tool.

    Use Special Service Tool: 307-649 Socket, Output Shaft Nut.

    Torque: 148 lb.ft (200 Nm)

    Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicles 

  5. Install the output shaft flange, the washer and the bolt.

    Torque: 98 lb.ft (133 Nm)

    1. Position the driveshaft on the output shaft flange, align the driveshaft flange yoke index mark made during removal.
    2. Install the new center bearing mounting bolts.

      Torque: 52 lb.ft (70 Nm)

  6. Install the new bearing straps (4A254) and the new bolts (56761).

    Torque: 46 lb.ft (63 Nm)

    Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) vehicles 

  7. Install the transfer case. Refer to: Transfer Case .

    All vehicles 

  8. Check the transmission fluid level. Refer to: Transmission Fluid Level Check .
  9. Start the engine. Move the selector lever through all gear ranges while checking for engagements to allow the main control hydraulic circuits to fill with transmission fluid.
  10. NOTE: The use of any transmission fluid other than specified may result in the transmission failing to operate in a normal manner or transmission failure.

    Using the scan tool with the engine running, check and make sure the transmission is at normal operating temperature 82-93°C (180-200°F). Check and adjust the transmission fluid level and check for any leaks. If transmission fluid is needed, add transmission fluid in increments of 0.24L (0.5 pt) until the correct level is achieved.
