Upper Oil Pan: Installation

  1. Remove the upper oil pan stud bolts.

  2. NOTE: Use guide studs to aid in installation. Studs must be fabricated locally.

    Position 2 guide studs in the cylinder block at the location shown.

  3. NOTE: Failure to use Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone may cause the engine oil to foam excessively and result in serious engine damage.
    NOTE: If the oil pan is not secured within 10 minutes of sealant application, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned with metal surface prep. Allow to dry until there is no sign of wetness, or 10 minutes, whichever is longer. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.

    Position the press-in-place gaskets in the upper oil pan. Apply a 3.5 mm (0.137 in) bead of Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone Sealant 1.0 mm (0.039 in) outward of the chamfer on the oil pan sealing face.

  4. NOTE: Failure to use Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone may cause the engine oil to foam excessively and result in serious engine damage.
    NOTE: The bead of Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone Sealant should cover the openings of the front and rear engine cover gaskets.

    Apply a 3.5 mm (0.137 in) bead of Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone Sealant 10 mm (0.393 in) long at the T-joint areas.

  5. NOTE: Final torque must be reached within 60 minutes of sealant application.

    With the help of an assistant, install the upper oil pan and the bolts.

    • Torque: Stage 1: 18 lb.in (2 Nm)
    • Torque: Stage 2: Tighten bolts 1 through 8, 10 through 14 and 19 through 25 to 18 Nm (159 lb-in) plus : 25 deg.
    • Torque: Stage 3: Tighten bolts 9 and 15 through 18 to 18 Nm (159 lb-in) plus : 90 deg.

  6. Install the upper oil pan stud bolts.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  7. Position the front wire harness and install the nuts. Connect the coolant hose retainer.

    Torque: 106 lb.in (12 Nm)

  8. Install the nut for the battery wire harness.

    Torque: 106 lb.in (12 Nm)

  9. Position the transmission cooler tubes and install the nut.

    Torque: 106 lb.in (12 Nm)

  10. Using an adjustable stand, raise the engine. Use the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle Stands

  11. Remove the suitable tool from between the engine mount and the frame.

  12. Lower the engine and remove the adjustable stand. Use the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle Stands

  13. NOTE: Following this repair, up to one quart (0.95 L) of additional engine oil may be required to bring the oil level within the proper range on the dipstick. DO NOT OVERFILL.

  16. Install the oil level indicator.
