Cylinder Head: Disassembly

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2019 Ford F-550 Super Duty, 2019 Ford F-450 Super Duty, 2019 Ford F-350 Super Duty, and 2019 Ford F-250 Super Duty. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Aluminum surfaces are soft and can be scratched easily. Never place the cylinder head gasket surface, unprotected, on a bench surface.
NOTE: If the engine components are to be reinstalled, they must be reinstalled in the same positions. Mark the components removed for locations.
  1. NOTE: It will be necessary to adjust the Valve Spring Compressor as needed to get proper alignment with the valves.
    NOTE: Position the cylinder head on 2 pieces of wood to aid on removing the valves.
    NOTE: Use a small screwdriver and multi-purpose grease to remove the valve collets.

    Using the special tools, remove the valve collets and the valve spring retainer. Use Special Service Tool: 303-1516 Compressor, Valve Spring., 303-300 (T87C-6565-A) Set, Valve Spring Compressor.

  2. Remove the valve spring.

  3. Inspect and install new parts, as necessary.

  4. NOTE: Use commercially available valve stem seal pliers.

    Remove and discard the valve seal.

  5. NOTE: Note the location of the valves if they are to be reused.
    NOTE: It may necessary to file the tip of the valve to aid in removal of the valve from the cylinder head.

    Remove the valve from the cylinder head.

  6. Repeat the above steps for each valve.
  7. NOTE: Do not use Brake Clean and/or other solvents during the cleaning process, damage to the valve guide may occur.

    Using a 1/4 inch brass bore brush (obtain locally) lightly coated with clean automatic transmission fluid, clean the exhaust valve guides.

  8. Inspect the intake and exhaust valve guides and valve seats.

    1. Inspect the following valve areas: The end of the stem for grooves or scoring.
    2. The valve face and the edge for pits, grooves or scores.
    3. The valve head for signs of burning, erosion, warpage and cracking.
    4. The valve margin for wear.

    • Install new parts as necessary.
