Timing Drive Components: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2019 Ford F-550 Super Duty and 2019 Ford F-450 Super Duty. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Timing chain procedures must be followed exactly or damage to valves and pistons will result.
  1. NOTE: If the components are to be reinstalled, they must be installed into their original locations or engine damage may occur.
    NOTE: Lubricate the camshaft roller followers with clean engine oil prior to installation.

    Install only the identified camshaft roller followers onto LH cylinder head.

  2. NOTE: Lubricate the camshaft and camshaft journals with clean engine oil prior to installation.

    Install the LH camshaft.

  3. NOTE: Make sure that the components are installed to the position noted before removal.

    • Lubricate the LH camshaft bearing caps with clean engine oil.

    • Position the front camshaft bearing cap.

    • Position the remaining camshaft bearing caps.

    • Install the bolts loosely.

  4. Tighten the LH camshaft bearing cap bolts in sequence shown in 2 stages.

    Torque: Stage 1: 71 lb.in (8 Nm) | Stage 2: 45 deg.

  5. NOTE: If the components are to be reinstalled, they must be installed into their original locations or engine damage may occur.
    NOTE: Lubricate the camshaft roller followers with clean engine oil prior to installation.

    Install only the identified camshaft roller followers onto RH cylinder head.

  6. NOTE: Lubricate the camshaft and camshaft journals with clean engine oil prior to installation.

    Install the RH camshaft.

  7. NOTE: Make sure that the components are installed to the position noted before removal.

    • Lubricate the RH camshaft bearing caps with clean engine oil.

    • Position the front camshaft bearing cap.

    • Position the remaining camshaft bearing caps.

    • Install the bolts loosely.

  8. Tighten the RH camshaft bearing cap bolts in sequence shown in 2 stages.

    Torque: Stage 1: 71 lb.in (8 Nm) | Stage 2: 45 deg.

  9. Install the balance shaft drive gear onto LH camshaft.

  10. NOTE: Do not tighten at this time.

    Install the LH camshaft sprocket and a new bolt finger-tight.

  12. NOTE: Prior to installation, inspect the tensioner-sealing bead for seal integrity. If cracks, tears, separation from the tensioner body or permanent compression of the seal bead is observed, install a new tensioner or engine damage may occur.

    Using a vise, compress the tensioner plunger and install the Hydraulic Chain Tensioner Retaining Clip on the tensioner to hold the plunger in during installation. Use the General Equipment: Vise

  13. NOTE: There are 61 links in each timing chain.

    If copper links are not visible, mark 2 links on one end and 1 link on the other end, and use as timing marks.

    1. Install the RH timing chain guide and the bolts.

      Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

    2. Install the LH timing chain guide and the bolts.

      Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

    • Rotate the LH camshaft until the timing mark is approximately at 12 o'clock.

    • Rotate the RH camshaft until the timing mark is approximately at 11 o'clock.

  14. NOTE: Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise only. Do not rotate past the position shown or severe piston and/or valve damage can occur.

    Using the special tool, position the crankshaft, then remove the special tool. Use Special Service Tool: 303-448 (T93P-6303-A) Holding Tool, Crankshaft.

  15. Install the crankshaft sprocket, making sure the flange faces forward.

  16. Install the lower end of the LH timing chain, aligning the timing marks.

  17. NOTE: Be sure the upper half of the timing chain is below the tensioner guide dowel.

    Position the LH timing chain on the camshaft sprocket with the 2 chain (marked) links and the timing marks aligned.

  18. NOTE: The LH timing chain tensioner arm has a bump near the dowel hole for identification.

    Position the LH timing chain tensioner arm on the dowel pin and install the LH timing chain tensioner and the bolts.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  19. NOTE: Be sure the chain link and crankshaft sprocket timing marks are aligned.
    NOTE: The lower half of the timing chain must be positioned above the dowel.

    Install the RH (outer) timing chain on the crankshaft sprocket.

  20. Position the timing chain on the camshaft sprocket. Make sure the 2 copper-colored (marked) links align with the camshaft sprocket timing mark.

  21. Position the RH timing chain tensioner arm on the dowel pin and install the RH timing chain tensioner and the bolts.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  22. Remove the Hydraulic Chain Tensioner Retaining Clips from the RH and LH timing chain tensioners.

  23. Check for correct alignment of all timing marks.

  25. NOTE: Only use hand tools to tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt or damage may occur to the camshaft or camshaft sprocket.

    Tighten the RH camshaft sprocket bolt in 2 stages.

    Torque: Stage 1: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm) | Stage 2: 90 deg.

  26. NOTE: Only use hand tools to tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt or damage may occur to the camshaft or camshaft sprocket.

    Tighten the LH camshaft sprocket bolt in 2 stages.

    Torque: Stage 1: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm) | Stage 2: 90 deg.

  27. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise and position the crankshaft keyway at the 6 o'clock position.

  28. Remove the bolts and the balance shaft bearing support and camshaft bearing cap assembly.

  29. NOTE: If the components are to be reinstalled, they must be installed into their original locations or damage to the engine may occur.
    NOTE: Do not allow the valve keepers to fall off the valve or the valve may drop into the cylinder. If a valve drops into the cylinder, the cylinder head must be removed.
    NOTE: It may be necessary to push the valve down while compressing the spring.
    NOTE: Lubricate the camshaft roller follower with clean engine oil prior to installation.

    Using the special tool, install the roller follower. Use Special Service Tool: 303-1039 Compressor, Valve Spring.

    • Install the balance shaft bearing support and camshaft bearing cap assembly.

    • Tighten the bolts in 2 stages.

      Torque: Stage 1: 71 lb.in (8 Nm) | Stage 2: 45 deg.

  30. NOTE: If the components are to be reinstalled, they must be installed into their original locations or damage to the engine may occur.
    NOTE: Do not allow the valve keepers to fall off the valve or the valve may drop into the cylinder. If a valve drops into the cylinder, the cylinder head must be removed.
    NOTE: It may be necessary to push the valve down while compressing the spring.
    NOTE: Lubricate the camshaft roller followers with clean engine oil prior to installation.

    Install all of the remaining camshaft roller followers. Use Special Service Tool: 303-1039 Compressor, Valve Spring.

  31. Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise and position the crankshaft keyway at the 11 o'clock position.

  32. NOTE: Lubricate the balance shaft journals with clean engine oil.

    Install the balance shaft with the timing marks on the balance shaft gear (1) and the camshaft gear (2) aligned.

    • Install the balance shaft bearing caps and install the bolts finger-tight.

    • Tighten the bolts in sequence shown.

      Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)
