Cylinder Head: Disassembly

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2019 Ford F-550 Super Duty and 2019 Ford F-450 Super Duty. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
NOTE: Aluminum surfaces are soft and can be scratched easily. Never place the cylinder head gasket surface, unprotected, on a bench surface.

RH cylinder head 

  1. Remove and discard the CHT sensor.

    NOTE: The cylinder head assembly service part does not come with the front oil cover, the bolts or the gasket. It will be necessary to install a new gasket and the original front oil cover and bolts onto the new cylinder head assembly.
    1. If necessary, remove the bolts, the front oil cover and the gasket.
    2. Discard the gasket.

    LH cylinder head 

    NOTE: The cylinder head assembly service part does not come with the front oil cover, the bolts or the gasket. It will be necessary to install a new gasket and the original front oil cover and bolts onto the new cylinder head assembly.
    1. If necessary, remove the bolts, the front oil cover and the gasket.
    2. Discard the gasket.

    All cylinder heads 

  4. NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.
    NOTE: Lubricate the camshaft, camshaft journals and camshaft bearing caps with clean engine oil.
    NOTE: Do not tighten the bolts.

    • Lubricate the camshaft with clean engine oil and install the camshaft.

    • Lubricate the camshaft bearing caps with clean engine oil and install the front camshaft bearing cap and then the remaining bearing caps.

    • Install the bolts finger-tight.

  5. Using the special tool, compress the valve spring and remove the valve spring retainer keys, valve spring retainer and the valve spring. Use Special Service Tool: 303-1039 Compressor, Valve Spring.

  6. Inspect and install new parts, as necessary.

  7. Remove and discard the valve seal.

  8. NOTE: Note the location of the valves if they are to be reused.

    Remove the valve from the cylinder head.

  9. Repeat the previous 4 steps for each valve.
  10. NOTE: Remove the front thrust camshaft bearing cap straight upward from the bearing towers, or the bearing cap may be damaged from side loading.

    • Remove the bolts.

    • Remove the front camshaft bearing cap and then the remaining bearing caps.

    • Remove the camshaft.

  11. Inspect the intake and exhaust valve guides and valve seats.

  12. NOTE: Install new parts as necessary.

    Inspect the following valve areas:

    1. The end of the stem for grooves or scoring.
    2. The valve face and the edge for pits, grooves or scores.
    3. The valve head for signs of burning, erosion, warpage and cracking.
    4. The valve margin for wear.

  13. Check the cylinder head for distortion. Refer to: Cylinder Head Distortion .
