Oil Pan: Removal

All vehicles
NOTE:
During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
- Remove the following items:
- Remove the intake manifold. Refer to: Intake Manifold .
- Remove the cooling fan shroud. Refer to: Cooling Fan Shroud .
- Drain the cooling system. Refer to: ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, VACUUM FILLING AND BLEEDING
- Remove the oil level indicator.
- Install Special Service Tool: 303-1507 Brackets, Support.
- Install Special Service Tool: 303-F070 Support Bar, Engine.

- Remove the oil pan drain plug and drain the engine oil.. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment
- Install the drain plug.
Torque: 17 lb.ft (23 Nm)
- Remove and discard the engine oil filter.. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment
- Remove the retainer and position the engine oil cooler aside.
- Detach the starter motor wiring harness pin-type retainer from the oil pan.
Vehicles with automatic transmission
- Remove the bolt and position the transmission oil cooler tubes aside.

- Remove the nut.
- If equipped with automatic transmission, remove the transmission cooler lines bracket.
- Remove the starter motor wiring harness bracket.

NOTE: Failure to replace the transmission support insulator nuts may result in transmission support insulator damage. New transmission support insulator nuts will be installed during engine installation.NOTE: The transmission support insulator studs may come out of the insulator while removing the nuts.
Remove and discard the transmission support insulator-to-crossmember nuts.
- If equipped, remove the bolts and the skidplate.
- Remove the RH HO2S. Refer to: Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) .
- Remove the RH catalytic converter pipe-to-manifold nuts and discard.
- Remove the LH catalytic converter pipe-to-manifold nuts and discard.
All vehicles

NOTE: Failure to replace the engine mount nuts may result in engine mount damage.NOTE: Only use hand tools when loosening the engine mount nuts or damage to the engine mount may occur.
Remove and discard the LH engine support insulator bracket nuts.

Remove and discard the RH engine support insulator bracket nuts.
- Using the engine support bar, raise the engine. Install Special Service Tool: 303-F070 Support Bar, Engine.
Vehicles with automatic transmission
- Remove the bolts and the transmission inspection plate.

NOTE: Support the transmission on the pan rails only or internal transmission damage can occur.
Install a transmission jack and raise the transmission.. Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack
- Remove the bolts and the oil pan.
- Remove and discard the oil pan gasket.
Vehicles with manual transmission
- Remove the oil pan bolts.
- Lower the oil pan onto the crossmember.

- Remove the oil pump screen and pickup tube bolts.
- Remove the nut and position the oil pump screen and pickup tube into the oil pan.
- Position the oil pan onto the engine and install one bolt at the front and one bolt at the rear of the oil pan to hold it in position.
- Using the engine support bar, align the engine support insulator studs and lower the engine. Install Special Service Tool: 303-F070 Support Bar, Engine.
- Remove the flywheel. Refer to: Flywheel .
- Remove the engine-to-transmission spacer plate.
- Remove the crankshaft ignition pulse ring.
- Remove the bolts and the oil pan.
- Remove and discard the oil pan gasket.
- Remove the oil pump screen and pickup tube from the oil pan.
- Remove and discard the oil pump screen and pickup tube O-ring seal.
All vehicles
- Clean and prepare the RTV sealing surface. Refer to: RTV Sealing Surface Cleaning and Preparation
