Front Wheel Bearing and Wheel Hub - F-250 F-350: Removal

NOTE:
Suspension fasteners are critical parts that affect the performance of vital components and systems. Failure of these fasteners may result in major service expense. Use the same or equivalent parts if replacement is necessary. Do not use a replacement part of lesser quality or substitute design. Tighten fasteners as specified.

- Remove the wheel and tire. Refer to: Wheel and Tire - Vehicles With: Dual Rear Wheels . Refer to: Wheel and Tire - Vehicles With: Single Rear Wheels .

NOTE: Do not pry in the caliper sight hole to retract the pistons as this can damage the pistons and boots.NOTE: Do not allow the brake caliper to hang from the brake hose or damage to the hose can occur.NOTE: F250 and F350 shown.
Remove the bolts and position the brake caliper and anchor plate aside. Discard the bolts.
- Remove the grease cap.

- Remove and discard the cotter pin.
- Remove the spindle nut retainer.
- Remove and discard the wheel spindle nut and washer.
- Remove the outer wheel bearing.

NOTE: Use extreme care not to damage the spindle when removing the bearing or the hub.
Remove the front wheel hub assembly.

NOTE: This step is only necessary when installing a new component.
Remove and discard the inner wheel bearing seal.

NOTE: This step is only necessary when installing a new component.
Remove the inner wheel bearing.

NOTE: Do not spin the bearings dry with compressed air or damage to bearings may occur.NOTE: Remove all traces of lubricant from the bearings. Inspect bearings and bearing cups for pitting, spalling or unusual wear. If either bearings or bearing cups are worn or damaged, both bearings and bearing cups should be installed new.NOTE: It is recommended that bearings and bearing cups be installed in sets. If cups are worn or damaged, install the inner and outer bearing cups in the hub with an appropriate bearing cup driver tool. Check for correct seating of the new bearing cups by trying to insert a 0.38 mm (0.015 in) feeler gauge between the bottom face of the cup and wheel hub seat. It should not be possible to insert the feeler gauge.NOTE: This step is only necessary when installing a new component.
Clean and inspect the wheel bearings.
- Clean and inspect the spindle.
- If necessary. Clean and inspect the hub.
- If necessary. Use a brass drift to remove the inner wheel bearing cup.
- If necessary. Use a brass drift to remove the outer wheel bearing cup.
