Muffler and Tailpipe: Removal

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.
  1. Support the exhaust system before removing the rear muffler.
  2. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  3. Clean all exhaust connections before reassembly.
  4. Remove the catalytic converter. Refer to: Catalytic Converter .
  5. NOTE: During assembly, make sure the tab is fully seated in the notch on the pipe.

    Loosen the exhaust intermediate pipe-to-rear muffler pipe clamp.

    Torque: 41 lb.ft (55 Nm)

  6. Remove the intermediate pipe.

  7. Remove the muffler bracket nuts.

    Torque: 22 lb.ft (30 Nm)

  8. NOTE: RH side only.

    If equipped. Remove the rear shock absorber shield retainers and remove the rear shock absorber shield.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  9. Remove the rear shock absorber.

    • Remove and discard the rear shock absorber lower nut and bolt.

      Torque: 111 lb.ft (150 Nm)

    • Remove and discard the rear shock absorber upper nut and remove the rear shock absorber.

      Torque: 52 lb.ft (70 Nm)

  10. NOTE: If replacing Muffler transfer the clamp to new assembly.

    Remove the bracket nuts.

    Torque: 22 lb.ft (30 Nm)

  11. Disconnect the tailpipe isolator and remove the tailpipe.
