Torque Converter Seal: Removal

  1. Remove the transmission fluid pan to drain the transmission fluid. Refer to: Transmission Fluid Pan .
  2. Remove the transmission. Refer to: Transmission .
  3. Mount the transmission to a mounting Stand. Use the General Equipment: Mounting Stand

  4. Position the transmission upright and remove the special tool. Use Special Service Tool: 307-346 (T97T-7902-A) Retainer, Torque Converter.

  5. Install the special tool on the torque converter. Install the pin in the bottom hole. Use Special Service Tool: 307-651 Bracket, Pump Remover/Installer.

  6. Using the special tools, lift the torque converter. Use enough pressure to break the torque converter hub seal loose and raise the torque converter high enough to allow the torque converter to drain. Remove the torque converter. Use Special Service Tool: 300-OTC1819E 2, 200# Floor Crane, Fold Away. Use the General Equipment: Mounting Stand

  7. Clean the outside surface of the torque converter.

  8. Install the special tool into the torque converter hub. Use Special Service Tool: 307-421 Leak Tester, Torque Converter.

  9. NOTE: Always follow correct safety procedures while using the press. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

    Install the torque converter with the special tools installed into the arbor press.

    • Secure the press. Apply enough force from the press to seal the Torque Converter Leak Tester into the torque converter hub. Use Special Service Tool: 307-421 Leak Tester, Torque Converter. Use the General Equipment: Hydraulic Press

  10. NOTE: Use only clean, dry shop air.

    Using the special tool, apply air pressure. Use Special Service Tool: 307-421 Leak Tester, Torque Converter.

  11. With air pressure applied to valve, inspect for leaks at the converter hub, the seams and the studs. A soap bubble solution can be applied around those areas to aid in the diagnosis. If any leaks are present, install a new torque converter. Use Special Service Tool: 307-421 Leak Tester, Torque Converter.

  12. Remove the air hose. Release the pressure, and then slowly release the press. Remove the torque converter. Remove the special tools. Use Special Service Tool: 307-421 Leak Tester, Torque Converter. Use the General Equipment: Hydraulic Press

  13. Using the special tools, remove and discard the torque converter hub seal (7A248). Use Special Service Tool: 307-309 Remover, Torque Converter Seal., 100-001 (T50T-100-A) Slide Hammer.
