Road Testing Vehicle

Shift Point Road Test 

Many transmission faults set one or more DTC in the PCM/ TCM. In some instances a group of diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) may indicate a particular fault. The transmission may only operate in default or failsafe mode while certain diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are set. Clear the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) before starting the Shift Point Road Test.

NOTE: Always drive the vehicle in a safe manner according to driving conditions and obey all traffic laws.

Most performance based automatic transmission diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) require the fault to be detected multiple times before setting a DTC. In many instances the fault must be detected consecutively a predetermined number of times (up to five). Performing the shift point road test as detailed below increases the likelihood that a DTC sets if a fault is present in the system.

  1. Bring the engine and the transmission up to normal operating temperature.
  2. Operate the vehicle with the selector lever in the D position.
  3. Apply minimum throttle and observe speeds when an upshift occurs. Refer to the Shift Speeds chart.
  4. From a stop, accelerate the vehicle to 80 kph (50 mph) with the shifts occurring at approximately 2000 rpm. Stay in 6th gear for 30 seconds or until the TCC applies. Repeat this two times.
  5. From a stop, accelerate the vehicle to 80 kph (50 mph) with the shifts occurring at approximately 3000 rpm. Stay in 6th gear for 30 seconds or until the TCC applies. Repeat this two times.
  6. With the selector lever in the D position, speed above 80 km/h (50 mph) and less than half throttle, move the selector lever from the D position to manual 2 position and release the accelerator pedal. The transmission should downshift into 2nd gear. From the manual 2 position, move the selector lever into the manual 1 position and release the accelerator pedal. The transmission should downshift into 1st gear at speeds below approximately 45-56 km/h (28-35 mph).
  7. If the transmission fails to upshift/downshift, REFER to: Diagnosis By Symptom .
