Steering Gear: Removal

NOTE: While repairing the power steering system, care should be taken to prevent the entry of contaminants or failure of the power steering components may result.

NOTE: The steering gear bolts must not be reused. The threads of the bolts are coated with a dry adhesive. When the bolts are removed, the dry adhesive is degraded. If the bolts are reused, failure of the bolts and/or steering gear may occur.

NOTE: Do not allow the steering column shaft to rotate while the intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. Refer to the SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article for additional information.

NOTE: The sector shaft arm-to-sector shaft nut must not be reused. The threads of the nut are coated with a dry adhesive. When the nut is removed, the dry adhesive is degraded. If the nut is reused, failure of the nut and/or sector shaft arm and shaft may occur.

NOTE: New O-ring seals must be installed on the pressure and return line/hose fittings or a fluid leak may occur.

1. Clean the area around the power steering fluid reservoir cap.
2. Remove the power steering fluid reservoir cap.

Using a suction gun remove the power steering fluid.

Remove the LH fender splash shield to access the steering gear. Refer to: Fender Splash Shield .
Remove the sector shaft arm. Refer to: Sector Shaft Arm .
1. Disconnect the power steering fluid return line.
  Torque: 26 lb.ft (35 Nm)
2. Disconnect the power steering fluid pressure line.
  Torque: 26 lb.ft (35 Nm)
3. Unclip and position aside the power steering fluid lines.

Remove and discard the O-ring seals.

WARNING: Do not reuse steering column shaft bolts. This may result in fastener failure and steering column shaft detachment or loss of steering control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).

Remove and discard the steering column shaft bolt and disconnect the steering column shaft from the steering gear.

Torque: 22 lb.ft (30 Nm)

Remove and discard the steering gear bolts and remove the steering gear.
Torque: 295 lb.ft (400 Nm)
