Front Seat Backrest Cover: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2019 Ford F-550 Super Duty, 2019 Ford F-450 Super Duty, 2019 Ford F-350 Super Duty, and 2019 Ford F-250 Super Duty. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Front seat backrest trim covers installed on seats equipped with seat side airbags cannot be repaired. A new trim cover must be installed. Cleaning is permissible. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side airbag deploying incorrectly and increase the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
NOTE: Driver seat shown, passenger seat similar.

All seats 

  1. Remove the front seat. Refer to: Front Seat .
  2. Remove the head restraint guide sleeves. Refer to: Front Head Restraint Guide Sleeve .
  3. Position the backrest wiring harness(es) aside.

    1. Release the electrical connector retainer(s) from the seat track.
    2. Release the locking tab(s) and disconnect the backrest wiring harness electrical connector(s).

    1. Detach the backrest cover straps.
    2. If equipped. Route the backrest cover straps through the backrest blower motor snorkel.
    3. Position the backrest cover upward.

  4. Release the wiring harness retainer(s) and position the wiring harness(es) aside.

    Manual seat with manual lumbar 

  5. Adjust the manual lumbar to the fully relaxed position.

    1. Remove the clip and the recline handle.
    2. Remove the clip and the lumbar handle.

  6. Remove the side shield screws.

  7. Remove the side shield.

    1. Firmly grasp the side shield, lift up and out, separating the side shield from the recliner bracket.
    2. From underneath, squeeze the retainers together and pull out on the side shield.
    3. Slide the side shield forward.

  8. Position the manual lumbar assembly cable away from the seat track.

    • Disconnect the cable from the manual lumbar actuator.

    • Detach the cable retainers from the seat track.

    All seats 

  9. Remove the side airbag. Refer to: Side Airbag .
  10. NOTE: Power seat with power lumbar shown, manual lumbar similar.

    Feed the backrest wiring harness(es) out through the backrest cover opening(s).

    • If equipped, feed the manual lumbar cable out through the backrest cover opening.

  11. If equipped with climate controlled seat. Disconnect the backrest blower motor manifold from the seat cushion.

  12. If equipped with heated seat. Disconnect the backrest heater mat electrical connect.

    Multi-contour seat 

  13. Detach the multi-contour seat cushion hose retainer.

  14. Release the locking tab and disconnect the hose coupling assembly (orange) from the SCMG.

  15. Feed the multi-contour seat hose assembly out through the backrest cover opening.

    All seats 

  16. NOTE: Use care when separating the backrest cover from the hook-and-arrows, or the hooks can be torn from the backrest foam.
    NOTE: Base front seat shown, all others similar.

    Remove the front seat backrest cover.

    1. Invert the front seat backrest cover.
    2. Release the hook-and-arrows.

  17. NOTE: This step is necessary only when installing a new component.

    Remove the pin-type retainers and the front seat backrest foam.
