Test Procedure

  1. KH1 CHECK FOR DTCS 

    Are DTCs P3401, P3402, P3403, P3404, P3425, P3426, P3427, P3428, P3441, P3442, P3443, P3444, P3449, P3450, P3451 or P3452 present? 

    Yes No
    GO to  KH2. RETURN to SYMPTOM CHARTS for further direction.
  2. KH2 CYLINDER POWER BALANCE TEST 
    • Carry out the Power Balance Test. Refer to the instruction manual provided by the scan tool manufacturer.

    Are all cylinders contributing correctly during the power balance test? 

    Yes No
    GO to  KH3. CHECK for an engine mechanical or oil flow concern. Refer to the appropriate article in the Service Information to continue diagnosis.
  3. KH3 CHECK THE CYLINDER DEACTIVATION SOLENOID RESISTANCE 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • For cylinder 1,
    • Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 1 Solenoid connector disconnected.
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 1 Solenoid Connector, Component Side (-) Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 1 Solenoid Connector, Component Side
      CDC1 - Pin 2 VPWR - Pin 1
    • For cylinder 4,
    • Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 4 Solenoid connector disconnected.
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 4 Solenoid Connector, Component Side (-) Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 4 Solenoid Connector, Component Side
      CDC4 - Pin 2 VPWR - Pin 1
    • For cylinder 6,
    • Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 6 Solenoid connector disconnected.
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 6 Solenoid Connector, Component Side (-) Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 6 Solenoid Connector, Component Side
      CDC6 - Pin 2 VPWR - Pin 1
    • For cylinder 7,
    • Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 7 Solenoid connector disconnected.
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 7 Solenoid Connector, Component Side (-) Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 7 Solenoid Connector, Component Side
      CDC7 - Pin 2 VPWR - Pin 1

    Is the resistance between 5 - 14 ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to  KH4. INSTALL a new Cylinder Deactivation solenoid.
    Refer to the appropriate Electronic Engine Controls article.
    Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  4. KH4 CHECK THE CYLINDER DEACTIVATION SOLENOID FOR INTERNAL SHORTS 
    • For cylinder 1,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 1 Solenoid Connector, Component Side (-)
      CDC1 - Pin 2 Ground
    • For cylinder 4,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 4 Solenoid Connector, Component Side (-)
      CDC4 - Pin 2 Ground
    • For cylinder 6,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 6 Solenoid Connector, Component Side (-)
      CDC6 - Pin 2 Ground
    • For cylinder 7,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 7 Solenoid Connector, Component Side (-)
      CDC7 - Pin 2 Ground

    Is the resistance greater than 10K ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to  KH5. INSTALL a new Cylinder Deactivation solenoid.
    Refer to the appropriate Electronic Engine Controls article.
    Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  5. KH5 CHECK THE VPWR CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN 
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • For cylinder 1,
    • Measure the voltage between:
      (+) Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 1 Solenoid Connector, Harness Side (-)
      VPWR - Pin 1 Ground
    • For cylinder 4,
    • Measure the voltage between:
      (+) Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 4 Solenoid Connector, Harness Side (-)
      CDC4 - Pin 2 Ground
    • For cylinder 6,
    • Measure the voltage between:
      (+) Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 6 Solenoid Connector, Harness Side (-)
      CDC6 - Pin 2 Ground
    • For cylinder 7,
    • Measure the voltage between:
      (+) Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 7 Solenoid Connector, Harness Side (-)
      CDC7 - Pin 2 Ground

    Is the voltage greater than 10.5 V? 

    Yes No
    GO to  KH6. REPAIR the open circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs.
    REPEAT the self-test.
  6. KH6 CHECK THE CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • PCM connector disconnected.
    • For cylinder 1,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 1 Solenoid Connector, Harness Side (-) PCM Connector, Harness Side
      CDC1 - Pin 2 CDC1
    • For cylinder 4,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 4 Solenoid Connector, Harness Side (-) PCM Connector, Harness Side
      CDC4 - Pin 2 CDC4
    • For cylinder 6,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 6 Solenoid Connector, Harness Side (-) PCM Connector, Harness Side
      CDC6 - Pin 2 CDC6
    • For cylinder 7,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 7 Solenoid Connector, Harness Side (-) PCM Connector, Harness Side
      CDC7 - Pin 2 CDC7

    Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to  KH7. REPAIR the open circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs.
    REPEAT the self-test.
  7. KH7 CHECK THE CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • For cylinder 1,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 1 Solenoid Connector, Harness Side (-)
      CDC1 - Pin 2 Ground
    • For cylinder 4,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 4 Solenoid Connector, Harness Side (-)
      CDC4 - Pin 2 Ground
    • For cylinder 6,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 6 Solenoid Connector, Harness Side (-)
      CDC6 - Pin 2 Ground
    • For cylinder 7,
    • Measure the resistance between:
      (+) Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 7 Solenoid Connector, Harness Side (-)
      CDC7 - Pin 2 Ground

    Is the resistance greater than 10K ohms? 

    Yes No
    GO to  KH8. REPAIR the short circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs.
    REPEAT the self-test.
  8. KH8 CHECK THE CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • For cylinder 1,
    • Measure the voltage between:
      (+) Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 1 Solenoid Connector, Harness Side (-)
      CDC1 - Pin 2 Ground
    • For cylinder 4,
    • Measure the voltage between:
      (+) Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 4 Solenoid Connector, Harness Side (-)
      CDC4 - Pin 2 Ground
    • For cylinder 6,
    • Measure the voltage between:
      (+) Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 6 Solenoid Connector, Harness Side (-)
      CDC6 - Pin 2 Ground
    • For cylinder 7,
    • Measure the voltage between:
      (+) Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 7 Solenoid Connector, Harness Side (-)
      CDC7 - Pin 2 Ground

    Is any voltage present? 

    Yes No
    REPAIR the short circuit. Clear the PCM DTCs.
    REPEAT the self-test.
    GO to  KH9.
  9. KH9 CHECK THE FUNCTIONALITY OF THE CYLINDER DEACTIVATION SOLENOID 
    • Ignition OFF.
    • For cylinder 1,
    • Remove the cylinder 1 deactivation solenoid. Refer to the appropriate Electronic Engine Controls article.
    • Connect a 5 amp fused jumper wire between the following:
      Point A Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 1 Solenoid Connector, Component Side Point B Vehicle Battery
      VPWR - Pin 1 Positive terminal
    • Connect a 5 amp fused jumper wire between the following:
      Point A Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 1 Solenoid Connector, Component Side Point B Vehicle Battery
      CDC1 - Pin 2 Negative terminal
    • For cylinder 4,
    • Remove the cylinder 4 deactivation solenoid. Refer to the appropriate Electronic Engine Controls article.
    • Connect a 5 amp fused jumper wire between the following:
      Point A Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 4 Solenoid Connector, Component Side Point B Vehicle Battery
      VPWR - Pin 1 Positive terminal
    • Connect a 5 amp fused jumper wire between the following:
      Point A Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 4 Solenoid Connector, Component Side Point B Vehicle Battery
      CDC4 - Pin 2 Negative terminal
    • For cylinder 6,
    • Remove the cylinder 6 deactivation solenoid. Refer to the appropriate Electronic Engine Controls article.
    • Connect a 5 amp fused jumper wire between the following:
      Point A Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 6 Solenoid Connector, Component Side Point B Vehicle Battery
      VPWR - Pin 1 Positive terminal
    • Connect a 5 amp fused jumper wire between the following:
      Point A Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 6 Solenoid Connector, Component Side Point B Vehicle Battery
      CDC6 - Pin 2 Negative terminal
    • For cylinder 7,
    • Remove the cylinder 7 deactivation solenoid. Refer to the appropriate Electronic Engine Controls article.
    • Connect a 5 amp fused jumper wire between the following:
      Point A Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 7 Solenoid Connector, Component Side Point B Vehicle Battery
      VPWR - Pin 1 Positive terminal
    • Connect a 5 amp fused jumper wire between the following:
      Point A Cylinder Deactivation-Cylinder 7 Solenoid Connector, Component Side Point B Vehicle Battery
      CDC7 - Pin 2 Negative terminal
    • While holding the cylinder deactivation solenoid, quickly connect and disconnect the jumper wire to the negative battery terminal. The cylinder deactivation solenoid plunger vibration can be felt by hand when connecting the jumper wires.
    • Repeat as necessary to verify the cylinder deactivation solenoid operation.

    Does the cylinder deactivation solenoid plunger activate when the jumpers are connected? 

    Yes No
    Diagnose any base engine concerns related to the engine oil pressure. Refer to the appropriate Engine System article Oil Pressure Test, to check the engine oil pressure. INSTALL a new Cylinder Deactivation solenoid.
    Refer to the appropriate Electronic Engine Controls article.
    Clear the PCM DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
