Oil Pump: Removal

NOTE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan can cause engine failure.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Remove the oil level indicator.

  3. Remove the engine front cover. Refer to: Engine Front Cover .
  4. Remove the upper dash panel reinforcement.

  5. Position aside the hoses and the wiring. Remove the upper dash panel reinforcement.

  6. Install the special tool to support the engine.

    Install Special Service Tool: 303-F072 Support Bar, Engine, 303-290-05A Adapter for 303-290A, 303-290B-19 Adapter for 303-290B.

  7. Remove the trolley jack and wooden block.

  8. Disconnect the A/C compressor upper electrical connector.

    1. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
    2. Remove the nut.
    3. Remove the stud.
    4. NOTE: Note the different lengths of the bolts.

      Remove the bolt.

    5. NOTE: Note the different lengths of the bolts.

      Remove the bolt.

    6. NOTE: Make sure that no strain is placed on the refrigerant lines.
      NOTE: Make sure that the component is secured with suitable cable ties.

      Using a cable tie, position aside the A/C compressor.

  9. NOTE: The oil drain plug with O-ring seal is to be reused unless damaged.

    Drain and install the drain plug.

    Torque: 20 lb.ft (27 Nm)

  10. Remove and discard the engine oil filter.

    Remove the oil pan-to-transmission bolt.

  13. Clean and prepare the RTV sealing surface. Refer to: RTV Sealing Surface Cleaning and Preparation .

  15. Remove the bolts and the oil pump screen and pickup tube.

  16. Remove and the discard the O-ring seal.

    1. Push the tensioner spring down and release the spring from under the shoulder bolt.
    2. Remove the shoulder bolts, tensioner, spring and position the oil pump chain off the oil pump sprocket.

  17. Remove the bolt and oil pump sprocket.

  18. Remove the bolts and the oil pump.

  19. Clean the mating surfaces of the oil pump.
