Visual Inspection and Diagnostic Pre-checks
- Make sure the vacuum hoses are connected.
- Check the brake booster and vacuum hoses for obvious signs of leaks or damage.
Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may cause damage to the connector.
- V1: CHECK FOR DTC C0047:16, C0047:1C, C0047:1E AND C0047:64
- Ignition ON, engine OFF.
Carry out the ABS self-test.
- Is DTC C0047:16, C0047:1C, C0047:1E or C0047:64 present?
Yes No GO to PINPOINT TEST C . Go to V2. - V2: CHECK FOR DTC P258A:14
- Review the results form the ABS module self-test.
- Is DTC P258A:14 present?
Yes No Go to V7. Go to V3. - V3: CHECK THE BRAKE BOOSTER AND VACUUM HOSES FOR LEAKS
- Verify all the vacuum hoses are fully connected to their ports.
- Inspect the following items for leaks:
- brake booster body
- brake booster-to-master cylinder seal
- booster shell at master cylinder seal
- brake booster-to-bulkhead seal
- brake booster vacuum sensor seal
- brake booster-to-vacuum pump hose
- Are all hoses connected and are all items free of any leaks?
Yes No Go to V4. CONNECT or INSTALL new components as necessary. - V4: CHECK THE ABS MODULE VACUUM/PRESSURE SENSOR SIGNAL 1 (VAC_PRS_S1) PID
- Ignition ON, engine running.
- Access the ABS and monitor the VAC_PRS_S1 (PRESS) PID.
- Apply and release the brake pedal while monitoring the PID.
- Does the PID display change when the pedal is applied?
Yes No Go to V5. GO to PINPOINT TEST C . - V5: CHECK THE BRAKE VACUUM PUMP RELAY
- Ignition OFF.
- Remove the vacuum pump relay.
- Substitute a known good relay.
- Ignition ON, engine OFF.
- Does the vacuum pump continue to run?
Yes No REMOVE the known good relay. Go to V6. REMOVE the known good relay. INSTALL a new brake vacuum pump relay. - V6: CHECK THE BRAKE VACUUM PUMP RELAY OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Measure the voltage between:
(+) Vacuum Pump Relay Connector, Harness Side (-) VPRO Ground - Is any voltage present?
Yes No REPAIR the circuit. Go to V7. - Measure the voltage between:
- V7: CHECK THE BRAKE VACUUM PUMP RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Ignition OFF.
- Remove the brake vacuum pump relay (if not previously removed).
- ABS Module connector disconnected.
- Measure the resistance between:
(+) Vacuum Pump Relay Connector, Harness Side (-) VPRC Ground - Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms?
Yes No Go to V8. REPAIR the circuit. - V8: CHECK THE VACUUM IN THE BRAKE BOOSTER
- ABS Module connector connected.
- Ignition ON, engine OFF.NOTE: Subtract 3.3863 kPa (1 in-Hg) from the reading for every 304.8 m (1, 000 ft.) of elevation above sea level.
- Access the ABS and monitor the VAC_PRS_S1 (PRESS) PID.NOTE: 100mbar = 10 kPa = 3 in Hg
- Is the PID displaying higher than 71.11 kPa (21 in-Hg)?
Yes No Go to V9. The elevation in your area is causing the brake vacuum pump to run continuously. This is a normal condition. - V9: CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS MODULE OPERATION
- Ignition OFF.
- ABS Module connector disconnected. (if not previously disconnected)
- Using a good light source, inspect all disconnected electrical connectors for the following:
- corrosion - install new connector or terminal and clean the module pins
- damaged or bent pins - install new terminals or pins
- pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
- spread terminals - install new terminals as necessary
- Reconnect the ABS module connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly.
- Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
Yes No INSTALL a new ABS module.
CHECK OASIS for any service articles: TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA.
If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions.
If no services articles address this concern, INSTALL a new ABS module. REFER to the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) and Stability Control article.
ORDER a replacement ABS module and INCLUDE the RVC on the form.
If this is a Ford paid repair, INCLUDE the RVC on the warranty claim form.The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
