Fuel System - Overview
Overview
The fuel system:
- Is a Closed Loop Pressure Control Fuel System (CLPC).
- Saddle-type fuel tank.
- a Fuel Pump that operates on 6-12 volts depending on load, that supplies fuel under pressure to the high pressure Fuel Pump.
- a lifetime fuel filter (serviced as part of the Fuel Pump and Sender Unit).
- Easy Fuel™ (capless) fuel tank filler pipe assembly, which cannot be modified in any way and is serviced only by the installation of a new fuel tank filler pipe assembly.
- a supplemental refueling adapter located in the luggage compartment.
- a high pressure Fuel Pump that supplies high pressure, low volume fuel pressure to the fuel rails.
- a Fuel Pump Control Module located under the rear seat cushion LH side of the vehicle.
- Fuel tubes (liquid and vapor) mounted on the underside of the vehicle.
- Uses separately controlled fuel injectors for each cylinder. The fuel injectors are mounted directly into the head.
- Fuel injectors are supplied with pressurized fuel from the high pressure Fuel Pump to the fuel rail.
- Fuel Pump and Sender Unit containing:
- The Electric Fuel Pump which provides pressurized fuel to the high pressure Fuel Pump (FP).
- a serviceable fuel level sensor.
- a check valve which maintains system pressure after the pump is shut off.
- a pressure relief for overpressure protection in the event of restricted fluid flow.
- a lifetime fuel filter providing filtration to protect the fuel injectors from foreign material.
Fuel Pump Shut-off Feature
When the fuel cutoff algorithm threshold is reached or an airbag is deployed the RCM changes state of the ENS signal to a fuel cutoff state to the BCM and also issues a fuel cut-off CAN message that is used by both the BCM and PCM modules. The BCM then deactivates the Electronic Fuel Pump Relay (EFPR), which then cuts power to the fuel tank pump. The CAN message is used also by the PCM to issue a Fuel Pump control signal to the EFPR to cut fuel pump power. The Fuel cutoff signal to the PCM is used to shut-off the engine and shut-off power to the pressure valve on the high pressure pump.
In the event of a moderate to severe collision, this vehicle includes a fuel pump shutoff feature that stops the flow of fuel to the engine. Not every impact will cause a shutoff.
Should the vehicle shut off after a collision, the vehicle may be restarted by:
For vehicles equipped with a key system:
1. Switch off the ignition.
2. Switch on the ignition.
3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 to re-enable the fuel pump.
For vehicles equipped with a push button start system:
1. Press the START/STOP button to switch off the ignition.
2. Press the brake pedal and press the START/STOP button to switch on the ignition.
3. Remove your foot from the brake pedal and press the START/STOP button to switch off the ignition.
4. You can either attempt to start the engine by pressing the brake pedal and the START/STOP button, or switch on the ignition only by pressing the START/STOP button without pressing the brake pedal. Both ways re-enable the fuel system.
