Intake Manifold: Removal

NOTE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
NOTE: Unless otherwise noted, GT engine is depicted in graphics, Mach 1 engine is similar.
NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.

All vehicles 

  1. Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground and positive cables. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  3. Remove the cowl grille panel. Refer to: Cowl Panel Grille .
    1. Detach the wiring harness retainer.
    2. If equipped, remove and discard the nuts and remove the strut tower cross brace.

      Torque: 41 lb.ft (55 Nm)

  4. If equipped, remove the fasteners and the cowl extension.

    Torque: 26 lb.ft (35 Nm)

  5. Remove the engine appearance cover caps.

  6. NOTE: The engine appearance cover rubber grommets may remain on the cover. If so, remove the grommets from the cover and install them on the intake manifold before installing the cover.

    Remove the nuts and the engine appearance cover.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

    • If equipped, remove and discard the nuts.

      Torque: 41 lb.ft (55 Nm)

    • If equipped, remove the fasteners and the cowl extension.

      Torque: 26 lb.ft (35 Nm)

  7. Remove the EVAP canister purge valve. Refer to: Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Valve .

    All vehicles 

  8. Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe .

    GT 

    1. Remove the nuts.

      Torque: 62 lb.in (7 Nm)

    2. Position the heater hoses aside.
    3. Remove the heater hose supports.

  9. Disconnect the quick release couplings and the electrical connector. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

    Mach 1 

    1. Remove the nuts.

      Torque: 62 lb.in (7 Nm)

    2. Position the heater hoses aside.
    3. Remove the heater hose supports.

  10. Disconnect the quick release coupling, the vacuum hose and the electrical connector. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling

    Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

    All vehicles 

  11. Disconnect the couplings and remove the crankcase vent tube. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

  12. Position the heater hoses aside and remove the fuel rail insulators.

    1. Disconnect the fuel tube spring lock coupling. Refer to: Spring Lock Couplings .
    2. Disconnect the fuel tube quick release coupling. Refer to: Spring Lock Couplings .

  13. Disconnect the RH fuel injector electrical connectors.

  14. Disconnect the LH fuel injector electrical connectors and the fuel sensor electrical connector.

  15. NOTE: It is not necessary to remove the fuel rail from the intake manifold assembly.

    Remove the fuel rail bolts.

    1. Loosen the intake manifold bolts.
    2. Position the manifold up and towards the front of the engine to access the rear of the manifold.

    GT 

    • Remove the intake manifold.

    Mach 1 

    1. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connectors and detach the retainers.

    • Remove the intake manifold.

    All vehicles 

    1. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connectors and detach the retainers.

    • NOTE: Visually inspect the manifold gaskets for nicks, cuts and abrasions. If these conditions are NOT present, the gaskets may be re-used.

      Remove and inspect the gaskets.

    • Clean and inspect all sealing surfaces.
