Pinpoint Test A: Loss Of Coolant

  1. Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    The supercharger cooling system is a closed system providing for coolant expansion and contraction as well as changes in pressure as coolant warms and cools with operation. Various gaskets, seals, hoses and clamps contain coolant within the cooling system and keep contaminants from entering the cooling system.

    Possible Sources 

    • Coolant hoses or tubes
    • Hose clamps
    • Coolant pump seal or gasket
    • Pressure relief cap
    • Coolant pump leaking from weep hole
    • CAC
    • CAC radiator
    • CAC inlet and outlet pipes
    • CAC O-ring seals
    • CAC coolant outlet assembly
    • CAC coolant outlet assembly gasket
    • Degas bottle

    WARNING: Always allow the engine to cool before opening the cooling system. Do not unscrew the coolant pressure relief cap when the engine is operating or the cooling system is hot. The cooling system is under pressure; steam and hot liquid can come out forcefully when the cap is loosened slightly. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury.
  2. A1 CHECK COMPONENTS FOR DAMAGE OR FAILURE

    • Visually inspect the possible sources for obvious signs of physical damage or failure.

    Are any concerns present? 

    Yes  REPAIR as needed.
    No  GO to  A2
  3. A2 CHECK THE COOLANT LEVEL AND PRESSURE TEST THE COOLING SYSTEM

    NOTE: Allow the engine to cool before checking the coolant level.

    • Ignition OFF

    • Visually inspect the coolant level at the degas bottle and adjust as necessary. Pressure test the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Pressure Test .

    Does the cooling system leak externally? 

    Yes  If the leak appears to be coming from the CAC radiator, leak check the radiator. Refer to Radiator Leak Test, Removed From Vehicle . REPAIR or INSTALL new components.
    No  GO to  A3
  4. A3 CHECK THE COOLING SYSTEM FOR AN INTERNAL LEAK

    • Remove the coolant pressure tester.

    • Inspect the inside of the intake manifold for coolant.

    • Inspect the CAC outlet assembly and gasket for damage or signs of leaking coolant.

    • Inspect the CAC for damage.

    • Inspect the CAC inlet and outlet pipes and O-ring seals for damage or signs of leaking coolant.

    Is the CAC cooler, outlet assembly, gasket, inlet/outlet tubes, or O-ring seals damaged or leaking coolant? 

    Yes  Install a new CAC. Replace any additional components as necessary. REFER to: Charge Air Cooler (CAC) .
    No  The leak is not from the supercharger cooling system. Install the CAC with new O-ring seals and a new CAC coolant outlet assembly gasket. REFER to: Charge Air Cooler (CAC) . CHECK the engine cooling system for a leak. REFER to: Engine Cooling .
