Secondary Timing Chain Tensioner: Installation
WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
Left hand secondary timing chain tensioner
NOTE:
Do not remove the secondary timing chain tensioner shipping clip, until instructed to do so.
-
NOTE: The secondary timing chain tensioner and shoe are of a new design. The secondary timing chain tensioner is shorter than the previous design and does not extend through the bottom of the camshaft mega cap. The new design shoe has tabs that contact the front of the mega cap when installed.
Apply clean engine oil to the secondary timing chain tensioner O-ring seals and mega cap bore.
- Install the secondary timing chain tensioner by pushing it down all the way until a snap is heard and the tensioner is seated all the way down the mega cap bore.
- Install the secondary timing chain tensioner shoe.
- Position the secondary timing chain onto the VCT assemblies. Align the colored links on the secondary timing chain with the timing marks on the VCT assemblies as shown in the illustration.
- Dowel positions.
- The timing mark on the intake VCT assembly should align between the 2 consecutive colored links.
- The timing mark on the exhaust VCT assembly should align with the single colored link.
-
- Install the VCT unit and the secondary timing chain onto the camshafts. The timing mark on the exhaust VCT assembly should be located as shown.
- Using a wrench on the flats of the camshaft, have an assistant rotate the intake camshaft clockwise until the locating pin of the VCT engages into the end of the camshaft.
- Slide the VCT assemblies onto the camshafts until they are fully seated.
-
NOTE: Use a wrench on the flats of the camshaft to hold the camshafts while tightening the VCT assembly bolts.
Install the intake and the exhaust VCT assembly bolts.
Torque: Stage 1: 133 lb.in (15 Nm) | Stage 2: 90°
- Remove and discard the secondary timing chain tensioner shipping clip.
- Activate the secondary timing chain tensioner by pressing down on the secondary timing chain and tensioner top shoe until it bottoms out, let go of the tensioner and it will spring up putting tension on the chain.
- Install the LH timing chain. Refer to: Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) Oil Control Solenoid
