Cylinder Head: Disassembly

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
NOTE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
NOTE: If the components are to be reinstalled, they must be installed in their original locations. Mark the components for installation into their original locations.

LH cylinder heads 

    • Remove the fasteners and the heat shield.

    • Remove the fasteners, the intake and exhaust CMP sensors and the radio interference capacitor.

    RH cylinder heads 

  1. Remove the fasteners and the heat shield.

  2. Remove the bolt and the CMP sensor.

  3. Remove the CHT sensor.

    1. NOTE: This inspection is to determine if part of the CHT sensor is broken and the tip is still in the bore of the cylinder head. The CHT sensor is to be discarded, even if it is not broken.

      Inspect the tip of the CHT sensor. If the tip is broken off, the piece must be removed from the bore of the cylinder head prior to installing the new CHT sensor.

    2. Discard the CHT sensor.

  4. Remove the bolt and the coolant outlet.

    • Discard the O-ring seal.

    All cylinder heads 

  5. Remove the spark plugs.

  6. Using the special tools, remove the keys, retainer and spring. Use Special Service Tool: 303-300 (T87C-6565-A) Set, Valve Spring Compressor., 303-350 (T89P-6565-A) Compressor, Valve Spring., 303-1249 Valve Spring Compressor., 303-1418 Compressor, Valve Spring.

  7. Remove and discard the valve stem seal.

  8. Remove the valve from the cylinder head.

  9. Repeat the previous steps for each of the remaining valves.
