Pinpoint Test J: RH (Right-Hand) Tailpipe Actuator Faults

  1. Refer to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS - 2.3L for schematic and connector information.

    Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    There is a tailpipe actuator in the inboard muffler tailpipe to control exhaust noise. The PCM uses a PWM circuit to control the operation of the tailpipe actuator. A second PWM circuit is used by the tailpipe actuator to relay actuator position and faults back to the PCM. The PCM opens the actuators based on engine load, engine RPM and vehicle speed. In normal  or Snow/Wet  modes, with the engine running, the actuators partially open (45 degrees). Putting the vehicle exhaust mode  into Sport  , forces the actuators to almost full open. Putting the vehicle exhaust mode  into Track or Drag Strip  , forces the actuators to full open. Refer to the Owner's Literature for more information. The valve position can be verified by looking into the inboard muffler outlet pipes.

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions 

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
    PCM P26C5:00 Exhaust Flow Control Valve 'A' Control Circuit/Open: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets when an open is detected on the RH tailpipe actuator circuit.
    PCM P26C6:00 Exhaust Flow Control Valve 'A' Control Circuit Low: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets when a short to ground is detected on the RH tailpipe actuator circuit.
    PCM P26C7:00 Exhaust Flow Control Valve 'A' Control Circuit High: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets when a short to voltage is detected on the RH tailpipe actuator circuit.
    PCM P26FE:00 Exhaust Flow Control Valve 'A' Control Performance: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets when the RH tailpipe actuator is stuck in the open, closed or in an unknown position.
    PCM P2BF5:00 Exhaust Flow Control Valve 'A' Position Circuit Range/Performance: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets when an circuit fault is detected on the RH tailpipe feedback circuit.

    Possible Sources 

    • RH tailpipe actuator
    • PCM
    • Wiring, terminals or connectors

    Visual Inspection and Pre-checks 

    • With the ignition OFF and the PCM in sleep mode the tailpipe actuators perform a self-test when the clutch pedal or the engine start/stop button is pressed. This self-test may take up to 9 minutes to be performed. During the self-test, the tailpipe actuators fully open and close twice. If the clutch pedal and engine start/stop button are pressed simultaneously, the engine starts and may sound like it is revving without a corresponding engine RPM change, this is normal operation.

  2. J1 CHECK FOR DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)

    • Start the engine.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the KOERPCM selftest.

    Are Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P26C5, P26C6, P26C7, P26FE or P2BF5 present? 

    Yes  If Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P26C5, P26C6, P26C7 or P2BF5 are present or if DTC P26FE is present along with P26C5, P26C6, P26C7 or P2BF5 GO to  J4 If DTC P26FE is the only tailpipe actuator DTC present GO to  J2
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The DTC may have been set as a result of other DTC(s), high network traffic or an intermittent fault condition.
  3. J2 CHECK THE RH (RIGHT-HAND) TAILPIPE ACTUATOR PID (PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION) FOR A MECHANICAL FAULT

    • Start the engine.

    • Using the diagnostic scan tool, view PCM Parameter Identifications (PIDs).

    • Monitor the EFCV_A_MON_STAT PID.

    • Using the PID EFCV_A_CMD open the tailpipe actuator in 10% increments until it has reached 100% (fully open).

    • Using the PID EFCV_A_CMD close the tailpipe actuator in 10% increments until it has reached 0% (fully closed).

    Does the EVCV_A_MON_STAT PID display a mechanical fault? 

    Yes  GO to  J3
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The DTC may have been set as a result of a temporary restriction caused by debris in the actuator valve.
  4. J3 REMOVE AND INSPECT THE RH (RIGHT-HAND) TAILPIPE ACTUATOR

    Were there any problems identified during the inspection? 

    Yes  REPAIR as necessary. INSTALL the tailpipe actuator and CHECK the system for normal operation.
    No  INSTALL a new actuator.
  5. J4 CHECK TAILPIPE ACTUATOR POWER

    • Disconnect RH TAILPIPE ACTUATOR C4473 .

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure and record:

    • Measure:

    Is the connector voltage within 0.5V of the recorded battery voltage? 

    Yes  GO to  J5
    No  GO to  J8
  6. J5 CHECK THE RH (RIGHT-HAND) TAILPIPE ACTUATOR PWM (PULSE WIDTH MODULATION) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Perform a wiggle test on the tailpipe actuator wiring and measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is any voltage present? 

    Yes  REPAIR the circuit.
    No  GO to  J6
  7. J6 CHECK THE RH (RIGHT-HAND) TAILPIPE ACTUATOR PWM (PULSE WIDTH MODULATION) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  J7
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  8. J7 CHECK THE RH (RIGHT-HAND) TAILPIPE ACTUATOR PWM (PULSE WIDTH MODULATION) CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new RH TAILPIPE ACTUATOR. REFER to: Exhaust Tailpipe Actuator . CLEAR the DTC. RERUN the PCM self-test. If the DTC returns, GO to  J13
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  9. J8 CHECK THE TAILPIPE ACTUATOR GROUND CIRCUIT

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  J10
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  10. J9 CHECK THE EXHAUST VALVES FUSE

    • Check BJB Exhaust Valve fuse F34 (15A).

    Is the BJB Exhaust Valve fuse F34 (15A) OK? 

    Yes  REPAIR the circuit for an open.
    No  GO to  J10
  11. J10 CHECK THE EXHAUST VALVES RELAY

    Is a concern present? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new Exhaust Valves relay.
    No  GO to  J11
  12. J11 CHECK POWER CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Disconnect LH TAILPIPE ACTUATOR C4474 .

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  J12
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  13. J12 CHECK RH (RIGHT-HAND) TAILPIPE ACTUATOR FOR INTERNAL SHORT

    • Connect LH TAILPIPE ACTUATOR C4474 .

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new RH TAILPIPE ACTUATOR. REFER to: Exhaust Tailpipe Actuator
    No  GO to  J13
  14. J13 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE) OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect the PCM connectors.

    • Disconnect the RH tailpipe actuator connectors.

    • Inspect all disconnected connectors for:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Reconnect all  disconnected connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable service articles: TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA. If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions. If no service articles address this concern, INSTALL a new PCM. Refer to the appropriate REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  procedure.
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
